Territorial AmbitionsSecond, when the war in Tigray began in November 2020, the first to act were the Amhara special forces and militias. At the war’s outset, the Amhara forces took over the territories in and around Welkait and Raya from the Tigray region. The Tigray Interim Administration has called for urgent assistance to combat what it says is possibly the worst desert locust invasion in recent memory, threatening the region. Getachew Reda, in a tweet posted today, appealed to the people of Tigray, the federal government of Ethiopia, and the international community to help address the “colossal challenge” posed by the locust invasion. (CNN) — At least 26 people have been killed in an explosion in the town of Finote Selam in northwestern Ethiopia, amid heavy fighting between government forces and a local militia group. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) expressed “grave concern” over heavy fighting between the two groups beginning August 3 “following months of tension and sporadic clashes,” it said in a statement Monday. The Ethiopian government declared a six-month state of emergency in the Amhara region on August 4 after days of clashes. The United Nations “called on all sides to respect human rights and take steps to deescalate the situation,” noting that “previous states of emergency have been accompanied by violations of human rights” in a statement Friday. CNN has reached out to the federal government, the Ethiopian National Defense Forces, and the Amhara regional government for comment.

Aliyah and Absorption Minister Ofir Sofer says there is no extraction mission being planned out of Ethiopia’s Gondar for locals who say they have Jewish roots. Ethiopia has thousands of people who say they have Jewish roots but are not eligible to immigrate under that law. That group, known as Falasha, is descended from Ethiopian Jews who converted to Christianity under duress in the 19th century. In 1992, Beta Israel Ethiopians living in Israel began lobbying for their Falasha relatives who had stayed behind to be allowed to immigrate. In a statement about Sofer’s meeting, his office sidesteps the issue by referring only to immigration under the Law of Return.
