Live Aid has been hailed as a moment that brought together 1.5 billion people through music. The Band Aid Charitable Trust has given its permission for the musical to go ahead and will receive 10 per cent of the ticket sales. Bob acknowledged Queen as “absolutely the best band of the day” with their 21-minute set.

News: Rights body confirms six people killed, several injured in recent clashes between Oromia, Somali security forces

Photo: EHRCAddis Abeba -The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has confirmed that six civilians were killed in the Qoloji site for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), one of the largest IDP sites in the Somali region, and several others injured in the recent clashes involving security forces of the Oromia and Somali regional states. In the last week of September, clashes flared up between local militias from the two regional states in Babile district/woreda which exists as an administrative unit both in Fafan zone of the Somali region and East Hararghe zone of Oromia region. The commission also urged government security forces to refrain from actions that endanger the saftey and security of displaced civilians in accordance to the Kampala agreement signed to protect IDPs from being victims of any conflict. The residents in those areas have been repeatedly complaining about the federal government’s failure to resolve recurring conflicts in the area involving the security forces of the two regional state governments.

Yonas Alemu is an Ethiopian entrepreneur with a commitment: helping Ethiopian farmers benefit from the commercialisation of teff, the world’s smallest grain, native to the Horn of Africa. “We grow up knowing about kachi kachi, which is the stone we feel when we eat our injera (flatbread made from teff)”, Alemu explains. This hampers Ethiopian farmers’ ability to sell their products on the market, which is where Lovegrass comes in. Last year, Lovegrass’ farmers harvested 2 tonnes of teff and this year Alemu expects an even better result.

Mali: army convoy redeployed north to rebel stronghold
The Malian army was redeployed from Gao to the northern region of Kidal on Monday, according to two security officials who spoke under condition of anonymity. The convoy of 119 vehicles left Gao on Monday morning heading towards the Tuareg rebel stronghold which lies 300km to the northeast of the city. The decision to move was taken on Sunday evening at a meeting of national security chiefs, the officials said. The north of Mali has seen a resurgence of hostilities by predominantly Tuareg rebels against the Malian army since the end of August. The deal came under strain, however, in 2020, following a coup which toppled the civilian government.

News: At least 18 people die of drought-related hunger in two districts in Wag Hemra zone, Amhara region

Similarly, Shegau Tesema, the region’s North Gondar zone District Administrator told the BBC that 16 people have died in Janamora district due to the dire drought; many of the deceased were women and elderly people. Although all the concerned parties had reported the severity of the situation, no response was received so far,” the administrator stated. Only estimated $ 928 million was secured out of the 1.66 billion USD required for the drought response as of the end of December 2022.

Aerial pest control campaign in Ethiopia’s Amhara region suspended due to unrest
Ongoing unrest has forced the suspension of the aerial pest control campaign in Ethiopia’s northern Amhara region, an Ethiopian official said Saturday evening. Agidew Molla, director of Crop Development and Protection at Amhara Region Agriculture Bureau, said that even though destructive crop pest swarms have been detected in the eastern part of the region, pest control measures have been suspended due to uncertain security situation in affected areas. Molla said that even though local farmers are undertaking traditional pest control measures, his bureau has been unable to complement these efforts with aerial campaigns, reported regional administration-owned Amhara Media Corporation. Even though there are sufficient provisions for anti-pest chemicals, the uncertain security situation in the Amhara region has prevented aerial pest campaigns from being done in affected areas, Molla added. The clashes between federal government-aligned security forces and a local militia known as Fano in the Amhara region forced the Ethiopian government to declare a six-month state of emergency in August.
