Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has said Cairo stands shoulder to shoulder with Somalia and has slammed Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland to obtain access to the sea and establish a marine force base. “Egypt will not allow anyone to threaten Somalia or affect its security,” el-Sisi said, speaking at a news conference with visiting Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. On January 1, in a memorandum, Ethiopia said it would consider recognising Somaliland’s independence in return for the port access. Besides meeting President el-Sisi, he met with Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Al-Azhar Mosque’s Grand Imam, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb. Ethiopia & Somalia are not just neighbors who share a border but they are fraternal nations sharing a common language, culture & people.

At 30K, the leading group became thinner with Kenyan Joshua Kogo and Ethiopia’s Mitku Tafa remaining with Lemi, Alew and Kiptoo. However, Minsewo took the lead right from the beginning to the surprise of the rest and maintained her tempo throughout the race. As he entered the home stretch of the 2024 Tata Mumbai Marathon on Sunday, Hayle Lemi's race was between him and his own course record of last year. Lemi eventually took 18 seconds more than the course record, but 2:07:50 was good enough to land him a second straight win in this World Athletics Gold Label Road Race. "It's a great feeling to win in Mumbai again," said Lemi, speaking via a translator. Around the 25km mark, the bunch was a minute quicker than at the same stage last year, raising hopes of another course record.

Mumbai, Jan 21 (PTI) Ethiopian runners dominated the Tata Mumbai Marathon as defending champion Hayle Lemi Berhanu and Aberash Minsewo won the men's women's race, respectively, here on Sunday. Among Indian men, Srinu Bugatha recorded the best finish with a timing of 2:17:29, followed by Gopi Thonakal and Sher Singh Tanwar. It was Ethiopia all the way in the elite race across categories. In men's elite, Lemi recorded a second consecutive win in the gold label road race with a timing of 2:07:50. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has warned Ethiopia over its preliminary deal with Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland to gain access to the Red Sea. It sits at a strategic location close to the Gulf of Aden and the southern mouth of the Red Sea. Addressing Ethiopia directly, Mr El Sisi said Addis Ababa should aim to secure access to the Red Sea through “traditional channels” with Djibouti, Somalia and Eritrea. The Ethiopian government maintains that access to the Red Sea is an existential necessity for the Horn of Africa nation. EPAEgypt also fears if Ethiopia gains access to the Red Sea via the Somaliland deal, it could be tempted to establish a military presence that could potentially threaten Egyptian interests in the strategic waterway.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has declared that Egypt will not tolerate any threats to Somalia’s security, amid escalating tensions in the Horn of Africa involving Ethiopia and the self-declared independent region of Somaliland. During a news conference in Cairo with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President Sisi emphasized Egypt’s commitment to Somalia’s stability. Under this agreement, Ethiopia would consider recognizing Somaliland’s independence in return for gaining access to the Red Sea through the port of Berbera. Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991, but it has yet to receive international recognition. During his visit to Egypt, President Mohamud praised the Arab League’s supportive stance and reiterated Mogadishu’s rejection of the agreement with Ethiopia.

Ethiopians Hayle Lemi and Aberash Minsewo won the men’s and women’s elite races, respectively, at the Mumbai Marathon 2024 on Sunday. Interestingly, all podiums in the elite race went to the Ethiopian runners. In the women’s race, Muluhabt Tsega took the silver in 2:26:51 while Medhin Bejene clocked a personal best to take the bronze in 2:27:34.
