Egypt’s President Sisi Pledges to Protect Somalia Amid Ethiopia-Somaliland Tensions

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has declared that Egypt will not tolerate any threats to Somalia’s security, amid escalating tensions in the Horn of Africa involving Ethiopia and the self-declared independent region of Somaliland. During a news conference in Cairo with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President Sisi emphasized Egypt’s commitment to Somalia’s stability. Under this agreement, Ethiopia would consider recognizing Somaliland’s independence in return for gaining access to the Red Sea through the port of Berbera. Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991, but it has yet to receive international recognition. During his visit to Egypt, President Mohamud praised the Arab League’s supportive stance and reiterated Mogadishu’s rejection of the agreement with Ethiopia.
