The growth of this industry is mainly attributed to export incentive policies implemented by the government to promote and encourage private sector engagement in the flower export business. The discussion around Ethiopia’s flower export market is often heated, with many questioning whether the industry is in decline. At the macroeconomic level, several intuitive arguments can explain a negative relationship between domestic demand and exports. In a context of high domestic demand pressure, firms will work at full capacity and will not be able to meet external demand increases in the short run. Local market appealEthiopia faces a pivotal choice in the flower business: emphasize local market sales or focus on the export market.

World News In Brief: Rights Abuses In Ethiopia Must End, El Fasher Crisis Update, UN Stands With Niger14 June 2024Human RightsThe head of the UN human rights office (OHCHR) Volker Türk on Friday called for serious measures to be taken to end human rights violations that are jeopardizing reconciliation and peace efforts in Ethiopia. This call follows an update from OHCHR which analysed the human rights situation in Ethiopia between January 2023 and January 2024. A bloody civil war between Government forces and northern rebels erupted in late 2020 leading to major rights violations on all sides, including likely war crimes. The resolution calls for the paramilitary Rapid Security Forces (RSF) in Sudan to end their siege on Al Fasher. Separately, Mr. El Hillo stressed the need to revive the partnership between Niger, its people, and the UN.
