Israel re-opened a crossing on Wednesday to allow aid to flow into the hard-hit northern Gaza Strip. “This is the first day that we re-opened Erez crossing for a robust and continuous route for entrance of humanitarian aid into Gaza,” said Col. Moshe Tetro, head of COGAT’s Coordination and Liaison Administration to Gaza. The U.S. has been pressuring Israel to do more to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, especially the devastated north. International aid organizations have reported a widespread humanitarian disaster, warning that hundreds of thousands of people in northern Gaza face the risk of famine. Before Hamas’ October 7 attack, Erez served as a passenger crossing for Palestinians, including medical patients, laborers and travelers, going in and out of Gaza.

1-million-year-old plant mating give birth to world's most "popular" drink. — Unsplash/FileScientists have found that two different kinds of coffee species cross-pollinated in Ethiopian woodlands 600,000–1 million years ago, giving rise to the plants that produce the majority of the world's coffee. Approximately 60% of the world's coffee comes from Coffea arabica plants, which are currently found in tropical climates all over the world. New findings have indicated when and where the first C arabica plants most likely originated; they were published in the journal Nature Genetics on April 15. Because of the hybridisation process, each offspring has two sets of chromosomes from each parent, resulting in a polyploid genome.

By Duncan MiririNAIROBI, May 1 (Reuters) - Ethiopian Airlines expects to carry 30% more passengers in the year ended June from the year before, its chief executive told Reuters on Wednesday, buoyed by new routes and a rebound in global travel. For example, today we have aircraft shortage since the manufacturers, particularly Boeing, are delaying aircraft deliveries," he said. The delivery problems mainly affect narrow-body passenger jets from Boeing, he said, while the grounding is affecting wide-body aircraft used for long-haul travel. Ethiopian is operating a fleet of 146 Boeing, Airbus and De Havilland planes, below the ideal level of 150, Mesfin said, due to the delivery delays. The growth plan is expected to boost annual revenue and passenger numbers by 400% and 440% respectively by the target year.

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday approved about $1.3 billion as a Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) Arrangement for Côte d’Ivoire. Côte d’Ivoire is highly exposed to climate change through rising temperatures and sea levels as well as rain pattern changes. Economic vulnerabilities to climate change are mostly due to the country’s heavy reliance on agriculture, and the concentration of industrial and services activity in coastal areas. The country has identified priority mitigation and adaptation policies to increase climate resilience in its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). The strong collaboration with development partners should ensure complementarity of all actors’ programs to support the country’s reform agenda.
