Despite being the fastest-growing major metropolitan area in the United States, Austin maintains a quirky, laid-back atmosphere unlike any other Texas city. Also, keep in mind that one of the country’s largest celebrations of music, Austin City Limits, takes place over the first two weekends in October, so crowds and inflated lodging prices can be expected during this event. ACL is an amazing outdoor music festival for all ages, featuring more than 100 musical performances. Rowing Dock or Austin City Kayak Tours are convenient places to rent kayaks or SUPs nearby. This Central East Austin food truck serves up flavorful family-style meals of carefully smoked meats and standout side items, like jalapeño cheese grits and lemon poppyseed slaw.

A gay man says he was forced to quit his job at a Christian school in Colorado after administrators told him to denounce his sexuality or leave. Tonga had joined Valor as the boys’ volleyball coach and had been offered the opportunity to teach the girls’ volleyball team, CNN reports. But administrators reportedly became aware of a Facebook post Tonga had made saying he disagreed with the school’s beliefs on sexuality and marriage. “I know I can be a gay man and a child of God,” he said. “What they’ve done to this coach, and especially seeing the quotes that have come out from the administration, is gut-wrenching,” he said.

On Tuesday, a federal judge heard oral arguments in a lawsuit brought by a transgender female inmate challenging the D.C. Department of Corrections’ policy for housing transgender inmates, saying that the policy is discriminatory and relies too heavily on a person’s anatomical makeup. She demanded that she be transferred to a women’s housing unit and that the department change its policy to better accommodate transgender individuals based on their gender identity. Under the department’s previous housing policy, inmates were placed based on their anatomy, unless they were able to obtain a recommendation for alternative housing from DOC’s Transgender Housing Committee, comprised of corrections staffers, a doctor, a social worker, a mental health clinician, and members of the local transgender community. But opponents of the new policy change say it still does not eliminate the problems raised in Hinton’s initial lawsuit. The ACLU of DC and the Public Defender Service have since identified three additional transgender prisoners who never received hearings before the Transgender Housing Committee and were never reassigned to gender-affirming housing, even after the new policy was instituted.

It should also be noted that last year’s soccer season was more successful than many players and coaches anticipated. That being said, soccer season is back, sans modifications. On the boys side, there will once again be plenty of talented players and teams across the area this year. The returning Holliston team MVP wants to play soccer in college.

Sorry, Wayland, your town is quaint and historic and all, but at 13,493 residents, the 2020 U.S. Census says you are too big to host a new traveling exhibit produced by the Smithsonian Institution. Six small Massachusetts communities with populations of 12,000 or less will be chosen to host the Smithsonian's Museum on Main Street exhibit, “Crossroads: Changes in Rural America.”Applications open Monday for small-town museums, libraries and other cultural organizations interested in welcoming the exhibit. Mass Humanities, based in Northampton, will announce the selections in October. Host sites will be responsible for developing public programs to support the exhibit, including at least one community conversation held in partnership with another local organization. The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education authorized Riley to issue a mask mandate by a 9-1 vote Tuesday. After Oct. 1, middle and high schools can lift their mask mandates if they can demonstrate 80% of students and staff are vaccinated against COVID-19. The commissioner's policy applies to students age 5 and up and "strongly" recommends that younger students also wear masks. It exempts both students who cannot wear a mask for behavioral or medical reasons and staff who cannot wear masks for medical reasons. "Keeping students connected with school is especially important this fall, as students return to school after a challenging school year."
