LISTEN | FRONT BURNER: Front Burner 36:50 Stephen Miller: ICE’s ideologue-in-chiefMassive anti-ICE protests in Minneapolis intensified over the weekend, in the wake of the second fatal shooting of an American citizen involving federal law enforcement agents in the city this month. Today, we’ll be talking about Stephen Miller, Donald Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy, and how the deadly ICE surge in Minnesota is only the latest example of domestic policy that he has championed. In Trump's second administration, Miller is emerging as the main architect and enforcer of Trump's signature policies: from hardline immigration policies and mass deportations, to retaliation against the administration's perceived enemies, to increasingly aggressive foreign policy. He's the co-writer of a recent profile called "The Wrath of Stephen Miller." Those images have all now been removed and the only photo that remains on the account is the AI-generated image purporting to show Wedding at the U.S. Embassy. Sheinbaum’s office did not immediately return a request for comment on the president’s use of the AI-generated image. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, where an AI-generated image of Wedding was purportedly taken, is currently undergoing renovations, as seen here on Monday.

Carney chose to deliver his speech only in front of media, surrounded by his ministers, in the Citadelle of Quebec, a military fortification that overlooks the Plains of Abraham. Even Liberal Party of Quebec leadership hopeful Charles Milliard, a proud federalist, said that Carney’s speech in Quebec City would have benefitted from more nuance. We cannot ignore the darker parts of our history.”Even some in Carney’s government did not exactly offer praise for the speech. “So, maybe Mark Carney could have talked about collaboration and unity, but without starting this discussion about the Plains of Abraham and giving a speech there,” he said. “The Plains of Abraham have never been the symbol of a supposed partnership or collaboration,” he continued.

By courting Beijing on electric vehicles and canola, he was testing the structural limits of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). If Washington dislikes the resulting deal, it has the unilateral right to terminate CUSMA and replace it with a bilateral U.S.-Mexico agreement. It strains credulity that the prime minister pursued a China reset without consulting trade officials who know the terms of CUSMA. Either way, the result is the same: Canada now faces the most serious trade threat in a generation, and we provoked it ourselves.
