Gold prices in Bangladesh are rising at a historic pace, with premium gold now exceeding Tk250,000 per bhori, making jewelry increasingly unaffordable—particularly during the wedding season. Beyond consumer impact, economists say the surge reflects deeper concerns about currency confidence, inflation pressure, weak investment alternatives, and broader economic uncertainty. He noted that lower global interest rates typically lift gold prices, as investors shift away from low-yield financial instruments. SM Nazer Hossain, senior vice-president of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), said rising gold prices are putting financial pressure on low-income families, particularly for weddings and social obligations. Unlike countries where gold functions as a formal investment vehicle, Bangladesh’s gold market is feeling the strain of falling demand and shrinking trade volumes.

The threats and intimidation are aimed at forcing the family to drop the case filed over the lynching of the two men on suspicion of theft. In her complaint, Bharati, 36, said her husband and son-in-law were killed by a “mob” on Aug 9 last year. Among those arrested, Md Rubel Paikar, 30, was released on bail and, on Jan 22, allegedly threatened Bharati and her son Joy Rabidas after spotting them at Taragonj market. Nato chief Mark Rutte warned Monday Europe cannot defend itself without the United States, in the face of calls for the continent to stand on its own feet after tensions over Greenland. The diplomatic crisis gave fresh momentum to those advocating for Europe to take a tougher line against Trump and break its military reliance on Washington. “If anyone thinks here again, that the European Union, or Europe as a whole, can defend itself without the US -- keep on dreaming. The Nato head reiterated his repeated praise for Trump for pressuring reluctant European allies to step up defense spending. He also appeared to knock back a suggestion floated by the EU’s defense commissioner Andrius Kubilius earlier this month for a possible European defense force that could replace US troops on the continent.

Suddenly, dozens of young volunteers emerge from the silence, gathering before heading to the shores of a small nearby lake. “We are trying to change people's mindset.”Bangladesh Clean, the group that organized the day’s volunteers, is not just a beautification effort. Between 1901 and 2019, average temperatures in Bangladesh have increased by nearly 2°Celsius during some months. Bangladesh Clean has become one model for how residents are taking matters into their own hands. Karibul doubts the effectiveness of this plan, given the overwhelming number of disease-carrying mosquitoes already breeding in Bangladesh.

The country's economy will never return to normal with the questionable single digit interest rates of 9%-6%, said Bangladesh Bank governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur. The governor further said: "Interest rates are currently very high. Bangladesh will graduate from LDC as the need arises, but the single digit rates cannot be imposed again through political pressure." Dr. Mansur also said that market-based interest rates will be determined. It is not possible to bring the financial sector back to normal by implementing a tight monetary policy alone.”
