Indeed, while we must acknowledge that Bangladesh will not transition to renewables overnight, we also should not fall prey to complacency and just accept fossil fuels as our primary source of energy in the medium and long term as well. Moreover, this overreliance on fossil fuels and the deals required to sustain our energy demands through these sources risks locking Bangladesh into dependency, vulnerability, and governance deficits. Our energy demands will only continue to rise, and industrial growth and urbanization are inevitable. What is needed therefore is a participatory, transparent roadmap that sets uniform renewable energy targets across all policies, with civil society, independent experts, and affected communities all needing to be part of this process. We cannot afford another cycle of short-term fixes and fossil fuel bias.
