Accusations of corruption in case listings and misconduct towards a lawyer lead to judicial reshuffleChief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has replaced a judge from a High Court bench following allegations of 'discourteous' behaviour towards a lawyer during court proceedings. Justice Ataur Rahman Khan, who was part of the vacation bench along with Justice KM Hafizul Alam, has been removed from the bench. Amidst the uproar over allegations of corruption in case listings, the High Court bench experienced significant disruption. Later, Barrister Ashraf and a group of lawyers expressed their concerns to the chief justice, highlighting ongoing 'widespread irregularities' in the case listings and hearings of that High Court bench. Attempts to reach the bench officers for comment regarding the allegations of corruption in the case listings were unsuccessful, as none were present in the courtroom.

NEW DELHI, Oct 15, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - India's foreign minister flies to Pakistan for a summit on Tuesday, the first visit by New Delhi's top envoy to its arch-rival neighbour in nearly a decade. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will travel to Islamabad for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit to "represent India at the meeting", the foreign ministry said Tuesday. The last time an Indian foreign minister visited Pakistan was in 2015 when Sushma Swaraj attended a conference on Afghanistan. The same year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a surprise visit to Lahore to meet his then-counterpart Nawaz Sharif, sparking hopes of a thaw in relations with Pakistan. Pakistan's former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was in India's Goa in 2023 -- also a rare visit -- for an SCO meeting where he and Jaishankar were involved in a verbal spat.

HONG KONG, Oct 15, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Oil prices extended losses Tuesday after a report said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had told US President Joe Biden he would not strike Iran's crude or nuclear facilities in retaliation for a missile attack earlier this month. However, equity traders were broadly upbeat, pushing most Asian markets higher after another record close for the Dow and S&P 500 on Wall Street, with the third-quarter reporting season about to get under way. Adding to the downward pressure on oil is concern that China would struggle to reignite the world's second-biggest economy after a much-anticipated news conference on Saturday left investors wanting. The disappointment, which came after another briefing that fell short last Tuesday, has dampened a rally on Chinese markets, with Hong Kong and Shanghai paring the blockbuster surge that greeted the initial batch of stimulus. Key data later in the week, including on retail sales, trade and economic growth, could provide a fresh update on the state of the country's finances.
