Iran atomic agency says Israeli attack on nuclear sites 'unlikely'
TEHRAN, Oct 16, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Iran's atomic energy agency said Wednesday an Israeli attack on key nuclear sites was "very unlikely" and the country would be able to "quickly compensate" for any potential damage. "It is very unlikely to happen," said the agency spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi in a video interview with Nournews agency. "In the event of an attack on a key site: be sure it will not succeed," he continued, adding that "the country can quickly compensate for" any potential damage.

‘Joker 2’ Should Have Stayed in Arkham Asylum
Joker: Folie à Deux disrespects everyone who watches it in the cinema by wasting their money and time. The movie tries to ride upon the success of the original Joker but, much like every other sequel, it is the worse version of the original one. For the non-existent original plot, Arthur Fleck, this franchise’s Joker, is in court for the crimes he committed in the first movie. The film hints at the struggle between his two split personalities as he oscillates between remaining as Arthur and embracing the Joker. Arthur’s relationship with Lee Quinzel and other supporting casts lacks any emotional resonance, making the film feel hollow rather than immersing the viewers.

12 High Court judges barred in B’desh amid protest by students
Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Supreme Court on Wednesday suspended 12 High Court judges from judicial activities amidst protests by students seeking the removal of pro-Awami League “fascist judges”. Ousted premier Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government was toppled following widespread protests against a controversial job quota system in August. Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed took the decision after hundreds of protesters participating in the Anti-discrimination Movement besieged the High Court premises on Wednesday, calling for the removal of “pro-Awami League fascist judges”, The Daily Star newspaper reported. Beginning their protest on the Supreme Court premises, the students demanded the resignation of judges affiliated with the Awami League, who “toe the party line”, the bdnews24.com news portal reported. Following the announcement, the agitating students postponed the movement till Sunday.

Govt cancels eight national days, including Mar 7, Aug 15
Both Mar 17 and Aug 15 were previously public holidays. Prior to that, several student organisations reached an agreement on not observing Aug 15 as National Mourning Day at a meeting at Dhaka University’s TSC. The Aug 15 massacre was not commemorated for 20 years from 1975 to 1995 at the national level. The day has been observed as National Mourning Day since 2008 following a High Court order. The party’s Tungipara unit announced several events to mark National Mourning Day.

Police to get new uniform, logo soon

A committee formed for selecting police uniform and designing a logo has almost completed its task, police spokesperson Enamul Haque Sagor, AIG, Media and Public Relations told BSS today. The committee has selected several samples of the uniform and working to select truly a nice uniform and logo for all units of the police,” he said. Police Headquarters on August 12 last formed a 10-member committee headed by Deputy Inspector General (DIG-Logistics) Mohammad Ataul Kibria to change the color of police uniform and design a logo. The committee was given seven working days to accomplish its task, but the time has been extended, the spokesperson said.

Former Cornell President James Perkins established the Committee on Special Educational Projects, an initiative to boost Black enrollment, merely two years after John F. Kennedy’s adoption of affirmative action Executive Order 10925 of 1961. I argue that it is high time for a long-term system of consequences to reform the culture at Cornell. Surely new stringent initiatives have bolstered on-campus safety and assured Jewish students that violations would not go unnoticed. Cultural reform in favor of order, retributive justice, and effectual discourse is just what students — especially Jewish students — need. The Cornell Daily Sun is interested in publishing a broad and diverse set of content from the Cornell and greater Ithaca community.

Italy sends Bangladeshi migrants to Albania in bid to curb illegal immigration
In a bid to facilitate the plan, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni signed a contract with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama on Nov 6, 2023. Under the policy, rescued migrants must apply for asylum in Albania, where their applications will be scrutinised by Italian judges, Il Messaggero reports. Following Italy's lead, 15 other EU countries also signed agreements with Albania to process asylum seekers there. “The Italian government took the initiative to curb illegal migration to Italy and instead attract skilled workers through legal channels. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this week that Italy was setting an example for the rest of Europe with the policy.

Dengue: Three dead, 1186 hospitalised in a day
Three people have died of dengue, while 1,186 more patients have been hospitalised with the Aedes mosquito-borne disease throughout Bangladesh in the past 24 hours. The Directorate General of Health Services, or DGHS, said as many as 469 were admitted to hospital in Dhaka among the new dengue patients until Wednesday morning. With the new counts, the number of hospitalised dengue patients has reached 45,950 this year. As many as 3,697 patients are currently undergoing treatment for dengue in hospitals across the country. The DGHS has been keeping records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000.

Colorado’s Wildlife Deserve Better has raised about $1.6 million to fight Proposition 127, spending $1.3 million of that through Oct. 9.
