India on Friday firmly rejected any insinuation of wrongdoing after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name appeared in a reference contained in newly released files from the United States Department of Justice related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Modi’s 2017 trip was historic, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Israel since the two countries established full diplomatic relations in 1992, reports NDTV. The disclosures are being made under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed following sustained political and public pressure. The law mandates the release of government records not only on Epstein but also on his longtime associate and former partner Ghislaine Maxwell. Epstein was found dead in a New York jail in August 2019, about a month after being charged with federal sex trafficking offences.

The Appellate Division on Sunday rejected a writ petition filed by BNP-nominated candidate Manjurul Ahsan Munshi, upholding the Election Commission’s decision to cancel his candidacy for the Comilla-4 constituency over allegations of loan default. Meanwhile, the Appellate Division agreed to hear a leave-to-appeal petition filed by BNP candidate Mobasher Alam Bhuiyan of Comilla-10 and allowed him to contest the election pending disposal of the appeal. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Women’s Wing Secretary Nurunnisa Siddika on Sunday said women cannot assume the highest leadership position in the party as Jamaat follows Islamic principles, which, she claimed, do not permit women to serve as ameer. Have women’s rights been established?” she asked. Siddika maintained that merely appointing women to top positions does not automatically improve women’s overall condition. Meanwhile, Jamaat Women’s Wing chief Habiba Chowdhury said women make up nearly half of the country’s voters, yet many have long been unable to exercise their voting rights. She claimed that at least 15 incidents of attacks on female Jamaat activists in different districts had been reported to the EC, alleging a political vendetta behind the incidents.

India will spend a record amount on infrastructure and defense, the finance minister said in her national budget speech on Sunday, with plans for high-speed rail, submarines and fighter jets. New Delhi plans to spend $133 billion on infrastructure and $85 billion on defense, a respective rise of around nine and 15% compared to last year’s budget. Defense minister Rajnath Singh described the spending as “unprecedented” and said it would help equip India’s armed forces with fighter jets, drones, ships, submarines and other critical hardware. The world’s most populous country sees massive infrastructure spending as key to sustaining its high growth rate by boosting domestic manufacturing and creating millions of new jobs. “India is not content with simply being the fastest-growing economy,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said after the budget.
