Bangladesh Bank says investors’ interests can’t be safeguarded in five banks’ mergerBangladesh Bank has confirmed that general shareholders will not benefit from the merger of five troubled Shariah-based private banks. Governor Ahsan H Mansur announced on Wednesday that all shares of Exim Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Global Islami Bank, Union Bank, and Social Islami Bank would be declared “zero” as the merger process begins. The central bank declared the banks “ineffective”, dissolved their boards, forced management resignations, and appointed administrators to manage the process. The central bank noted that the merger would follow international best practices under the Bank Resolution Act. It confirmed that at present, the interest of the general investors or shareholders cannot be protected in the merger.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has released the supplementary results of the 44th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) exams with final nominations for the appointment of a total of 1,681 candidates. The commission issued a notification releasing the results on Thursday. PSC spokesperson SM Matiur Rahman told bdnews24.com, “The supplementary and consolidated results of the 44th BCS examination of 2021 have been released by canceling the nominations for the same cadre and lower cadre posts of the preference order.”In the supplementary results, 250 people in the administration cadre, 10 in foreign affairs, 50 in police, 14 in Ansar, 30 in audit and accounts, 11 in tax, eight in cooperatives, seven in railway, 10 in information, 23 in postal, six in commerce, 27 in the family planning, and three in food cadre received recommendations.

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has begun distributing nomination forms both online and offline for the parliamentary polls. The Anti-Corruption Commission has approved six cases against 11 people from six recruiting agencies on charges of embezzling and laundering about Tk 5.25 billion. Named in a separate case, Kiron is accused of taking an additional Tk 584.45 million from 3,489 people. His wife, the company’s managing director, has also been charged. The final case names Thanex International Limited former managing director Abdullah Shahed, Director Md Joynal Abedin Nomani and Managing Director Shamsher Ahmed. Under the previous agreement between Bangladesh and Malaysia, only 10 designated recruiting agencies were allowed to send workers until 2016.

Foreign Advisor Touhid Hossain has dismissed the letter sent by the Awami League to the UN calling for the suspension of assistance for the national elections as “ineffective”. Due to its suspension, the Awami League cannot participate in the elections scheduled for February. As a result, the Awami League candidates won 153 of 300 seats uncontested in the 10th parliament, which the BNP described as a “parliament without votes”. An abandoned pile of wood has caught on fire at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Pabna. Eight units of Fire Service brought the fire under control after about 45 minutes. Sharful said, “A pile of wood was kept on the side of the Rooppur project site. In total, eight units from the Rooppur Modern Fire Service Station, Green City Fire Service Station, Rooppur Temporary Fire Service Station, and Ishwardi Fire Service Station joined to bring the fire under control in stages. Nine members of a family in Sirajganj jailed over land disputePolice have arrested nine members of a family convicted in a land dispute case in Sirajganj’s Tarash Upazila. They were arrested at their home on Wednesday night, said Tarash Police chief Ziaur Rahman. According to the case details, a clash occurred in 2018 over a 0.07 hectare piece of land between the suspects and the plaintiff, Ashiq Ullah. Ashiq was seriously injured and later filed a case with the court. The convicts were later produced before court and sent to jail in the afternoon.

Chattogram Customs House has seized 24,960kg of poppy seeds that were imported from Pakistan under a false declaration as bird feed. During the inspection, they found that while the front section of the containers contained bird feed, the rear portion was packed with poppy seeds. It added that germinable poppy seeds are categorised as Class A narcotics under the Narcotics Control Act, 2018. The authorities also noted that under Article 3(1) (Kha) of the Import Policy Order 2021–2024, poppy seeds are listed as item number 15 among prohibited imports. Once the pods dry, the seeds -- commonly known as poppy seeds -- are harvested for use as a spice.

Five more patients have died of dengue fever in Bangladesh, while 1,034 have been admitted to hospitals in the past 24 hours. Of the newly infected, 200 people were admitted to hospitals in the DNCC area, which is the highest number reported. October saw 22,520 dengue hospitalisations, the highest monthly toll in the past 10 months. Before that, dengue claimed 76 lives in September, when 15,866 people were admitted to hospital. The highest annual hospitalisations occurred in 2023, with 321,179 cases, while the highest deaths in a single year were 1,705, also in 2023.

Five financially troubled Shariah-based private banks have suspended share trading, a day after Bangladesh Bank initiated formal steps to merge them. The five banks involved in the merger are First Security Islami Bank, Global Islami Bank, Union Bank, EXIM Bank, and Social Islami Bank. A day after the administrators assumed control, the suspension of share trading was also confirmed through the Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE). First Security Islami Bank had about 1.2 billion shares against a paid-up capital of Tk 12.08 billion at the end of October. General investors held a 31.20 percent share, while institutional investors owned 53.37 percent.

Bangladesh will enjoy a total of 28 public holidays in 2026, with nine of them falling on Fridays and Saturdays, according to the list approved by the interim government, according to bdnews24.com. The decision was made at a meeting of the Advisory Council presided over by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday, where the holiday schedule for the coming year was endorsed. Speaking after the meeting, Yunus’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said the total holidays next year would include both general holidays and those announced under executive orders. “Among them, nine days fall on Fridays and Saturdays, so the number of effective holidays during weekdays will be 19,” he added.
