As congratulations poured in from world leaders, Trump claimed on Wednesday he had been given a "powerful mandate" to rule. Tariffs inhibit global trade, lower growth for exporters, and weigh on public finances for all parties involved. The International Monetary Fund has already characterised global growth as weak, with most nations producing "feeble" expansion. A further hit to global trade is likely to present a downside risk to its 3.2% GDP growth projection for next year. Governments are also likely to retaliate against any US import duty, inhibiting trade further and cutting deeper into global growth.

WASHINGTON, Nov 6, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Donald Trump won the first of the swing states Tuesday as he pulled ahead of White House rival Kamala Harris, narrowing her path to victory in an agonizingly tight and suspenseful US presidential election. Democratic vice president Harris appeared to be underperforming in other key areas compared to the Republican former president. Harris's camp said the race was now "razor-thin" and that her "clearest path" to victory was through the so-called Blue Wall swing states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Trump's early wins included the predictably Republican Florida and Texas while Harris won California, giving Trump 227 electoral votes and Harris 172. Results from the other closely-fought main swing states were all still pending, but Trump was maintaining a lead in Georgia.

REUTERSRepublican Donald Trump opened up a significant lead in the US presidential election on Wednesday, leaving supporters of Democrat Kamala Harris hoping for an 11th-hour turnabout. The national exit poll showed Trump with a 51% to 47% edge with suburban white women voters. Even so, white voters were on pace to comprise a larger share of the electorate than four years ago. But Trump seemed to be holding onto the support of at least white women voters, according to exit polls. In Pennsylvania, Trump was maintaining close to the same level of support among white women voters that he enjoyed in 2020.

As the candidates in the U.S. presidential election make their final economic pitches to the American public, Donald Trump is leaning heavily on a familiar policy: tariffs. According to him, tariffs could be used not only to influence policies with trading partner nations but also to generate enough revenue to offset major tax cuts, potentially even replacing the U.S. federal income tax altogether. Details with Bryan Quinn. As featured on Jonah Goldberg: Amid a combative election, party realignment continued apace The term "realignment" gets used and abused a lot, because people have agreed to use it without agreeing on a definition. Traditionally, realignments are said to have occurred when majority and minority parties switch places.

WEST PALM BEACH, United States, Nov 6, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - US Republican presidential contender Donald Trump said he would be prepared to concede defeat after Tuesday's vote "if it's a fair election", while again raising concerns about the use of electronic voting machines. "If I lose an election, if it's a fair election, I would be the first one to acknowledge it... So far I think it's been fair," Trump, repeating a caveat that he has used many times on the campaign trail, told reporters after voting in Florida. Asked about fears of unrest after the election and whether he would call on supporters to avoid violence, he criticized the question. My supporters are not violent people," Trump said.
