Six to die for 1971 war crimes in KhulnaA tribunal has sentenced six people to death for murder, genocide and other crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War in Khulna. A three-member bench of the International Crimes Tribunal led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam delivered the verdict on Thursday. The convicts are Amjad Hossain Howlader, Shahar Ali Sardar, Atiar Rahman Sheikh, Motasin Billah, Kamal Uddin Goldar, and Nazrul Islam. They stand accused of war crimes in Botiaghata Upazila, reports bdnews24.com. However, one of their number – Mozahar Ali Sheikh – died of natural causes before the indictment.

Mongla port flags off its first garment shipment, paving way for new exportsFor the first time, a shipment of garments produced in Bangladesh has been shipped abroad from Mongla port, opening a new avenue for the export sector in the country, bdnews24.com reports. “It is a memorable day for Mongla port,” said Mongla Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa. “A month after the inauguration of the Padma Bridge, garment shipments have used the bridge to reach Mongla and paved a new way for garments exports. Bangladesh Bank has banned the purchase of all types of vehicles by banks amid the current economical condition. The macro economy is currently somewhat unstable due to the dwindling foreign exchange reserves of the country. Import expenditure increased by 39% to $75.40 billion from July to May of the 2021-22 fiscal compared to the previous fiscal year. Remittance flows during this period fell by 15% to $21.3 billion compared to the previous year. Last week, the country's foreign exchange reserves stood at $39.67 billion.

Bangladesh recorded five more Covid-19-linked deaths with 626 new cases in 24 hours till Wednesday morning. The daily case positivity rate rose to 6.83% from Tuesday's 6.14% as 9,225 samples were tested. The recovery rate rose to 96.79% from Tuesday's 96.78%. In June, the country reported 18 Covid-linked deaths and 20,201 new cases, according to the DGHS. The country registered its highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year and daily fatalities of 264 on August 10 in the same year.

Bangladesh has recorded 626 cases of Covid-19 in a day, taking the overall tally of infections to 2,003,570. As many as 9,162 samples were tested across the country, for a positivity rate of 6.83 per cent, reports bdnews24.com. Among the eight divisions, Dhaka logged the highest number of cases, with 350 infections. The latest figures put the recovery rate at 96.79 per cent and the mortality rate at 1.46 per cent. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

The population of Muslims have increased in the country compared to devotees of other religions, according to the preliminary report of Population and Housing Census-2022. The report said that the Hindu population decreased from 8.54% to 7.95%, the Buddhist population from 0.62% to 0.61%, the Christian population from 0.31% to 0.30% and the population of other religions decreased to 0.14% from 0.12%. However, the Muslim population has increased from 90.39% to 91.04%. On May 15, the data collection of the latest census started digitally across the country. The census was supposed to end on June 21, but due to flood situation across the country, the census continued till June 28 in the North-Eastern districts.

Development partners and donor countries have released more than $10 billion in loans and aid to Bangladesh in 2021-22, a record for a financial year in the country’s history. Bangladesh brought in the funds for development projects, which is 26 percent more than the preceding fiscal year. In terms of financing, the Asian Development Bank topped the list, followed by Japan and the World Bank, according to a report published by the Economic Relations Division or ERD on Wednesday. In the 2020-21 financial year, development agencies and partner countries supplied nearly $8 billion to Bangladesh. Economic Relations Secretary Sharifa Khan said, “Progress in the ongoing projects, those financed by foreign sources in particular, drastically gained pace in the last financial year with the COVID crisis abating.”

A Bangladesh Army helicopter crashed in Nababganj upazila of Dhaka on Wednesday after technical issues forced it to make an emergency landing, according to the Inter-Service Public Relations Directorate. The helicopter was on a routine training flight when technical issues were detected and it was forced to initiate ‘emergency landing procedures’ and crashed in the area around 1:00 pm, the ISPR said at a media conference. They were transferred to the Dhaka CMH by helicopter." They were taken to the Dhaka Combined Military Hospital and admitted there. Local police are providing security to the area and the helicopter, while rescue teams have also been dispatched to the scene, according to the ISPR.
