Four school students have died while picking water lilies from a lake in Meherpur Sadar. The Anti-Corruption Commission has brought charges of misappropriating Tk 104.7 billion against businessman Saiful Alam, better known as S Alam, alongside 66 others from the Islami Bank Bangladesh and laundering the money abroad. On Sept 7, 2020, the bank’s board of directors increased the loan ceiling for S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Ltd from Tk 24 billion to Tk 38 billion, exceeding 35 percent of the bank’s capital. These funds were later transferred to S Alam Group–related firms, including Sonali Traders, Global Trading Corporation, SS Power, S Alam Steels, S Alam Cement, and S Alam Vegetable Oil. The ACC said that the accused approved unauthorised loans by misusing power and committed criminal breach of trust, forgery, and fraud by manipulating Islami Bank’s software. The accused embezzled and laundered Tk 92.83 billion, which with accrued interest now totals Tk 104.7 billion.

The High Court has granted bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in five cases, including the murder case of a garment worker during the July Uprising protests. Dhaka University provost accused of ordering six students to clear hall room for VP, GSA controversy has erupted at Dhaka University’s Sir AF Rahman Hall after six resident students alleged that the hall provost asked them to vacate their room to accommodate the newly elected vice-president and general secretary of the hall union. According to the students, Prof Quazi Mahfujul Hoque Supon, the provost, summoned all six residents of Room 318 around 12:30pm on Sunday and instructed them to clear the room for the two leaders. The room, divided into two sections housing three students each, is officially listed under their names. “We only requested a room swap as our current space is overcrowded. Senior alumni told us past VPs and GSs stayed there, so we mentioned it to the provost, but not at anyone’s expense.”

According to Food Advisor Ali Imam Majumder, the government will procure paddy rice from the Aman season from Nov 19 to Feb 28. This time, the government has decided to procure 600,000 tonnes of parboiled rice, 50,000 tonnes of Atap rice and 50,000 tonnes of rice paddy. Parboiled rice will be procured at Tk 50 per kg, Atap at Tk 49 per kg and paddy at Tk 34 per kg. In the last Aman season, paddy was procured at Tk 33, parboiled rice at Tk 47 and Atap rice at Tk 46. However, the cost of production has come down slightly in the Aman season compared to the Boro season.”

A fire has broken out late in the night in a vehicle garage along the embankment in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, destroying several cars. Locals reported seeing multiple vehicles ablaze around 12:45am on Sunday, shortly after hearing a series of loud explosions near the ULAB University area adjacent to the embankment. Rubel, who lives near the garage, said the explosions were audible from a considerable distance, and immediately afterwards, flames engulfed several vehicles. Mohammadpur Police chief Kazi Rafique said, “I heard the fire started when a microbus gas cylinder exploded, and the flames spread to nearby vehicles.”The Fire Service dispatched two units from Mohammadpur to control the blaze. Assistant teachers from government primary schools have gathered at Central Shaheed Minar, holding a candlelight vigil to protest a police attack on demonstrators campaigning for 10th-grade pay. Muhammad Shamshuddin Mashud, convenor of the Primary Teachers’ Demand Implementation Council, told bdnews24.com that over 150 teachers were wounded during the police crackdown and are receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College and PG Hospital.
