Peru police seize cocaine marked with swastikas
Dozens of packages of cocaine marked with Nazi swastikas as well as the name “Hitler” were seized at a port in northern Peru, from where they would have been shipped to Belgium, police said on Friday. Police said it was investigating whether there were links to Nazi groups, saying there were no well-known groups in Peru and that it was possible the symbol was only being used as a style. Peru and Colombia are the largest producers of coca leaf and cocaine in the world, according to the United Nations. Last year alone, Peruvian authorities seized more than 86 tonnes of drugs and illicit substances, including 28 tonnes of cocaine. After being shipped to a Belgian port, Bolanos said the drugs would have been distributed across Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Spain.

Brazil’s government said on Friday the United Nations has confirmed the Amazonian city of Belem as the host of the COP30 climate change summit in November 2025. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva made the announcement in a video alongside his foreign relations minister and the governor of Para state, where Belem is located. “I’m convinced it is going to be a great event,” said Lula, who had previously pledged to try to bring the U.N. climate talks to a city in the world’s largest rainforest. Lula says he spoke to Putin about Ukraine war
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Friday he had a phone call with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and reaffirmed his willingness to establish peace talks with both sides of the war in Ukraine. The Kremlin confirmed the call and said Putin told Lula that Russia is open to dialogue over Ukraine. Lula has pitched himself as a peace broker to end the war, which began when Russia invaded its neighbor in February 2022. His proposal, based on Brazil’s tradition of non-intervention and neutrality, calls for a group of nations not involved in the war to engage both Russia and Ukraine in talks. The leftist leader was expected to meet with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Japan this month, but the meeting fell through because of scheduling.

Bolivia's Catholic Church says it was 'deaf' to sexual abuse victims
Roman Catholic Church leaders in Bolivia said on Wednesday the institution had been “deaf” to sexual abuse in Church-run schools and said they were taking action after a series of accusations in recent weeks led to protests and a legal investigation. The accusations were sparked by the publication in Spanish newspaper El Pais in April of the diary of a late Jesuit priest, which contained multiple confessions of sexual abuse of children in the schools he ran in Bolivia. It alleged Church officials knew about the abuse but did nothing. Since April, some 200 people have come forward to say they suffered abuse in religious-run schools in the country. The country’s attorney general is also investigating the multiple accusations of abuse.

Argentina in talks to expand China currency swap line
Argentina is in talks to renew and potentially expand its currency swap line with China, official sources confirmed today. The government’s goal is to double the free access amount, taking it to US$ 10 billion, an official source told the Herald. The country has free access to some US$5 billion as part of the China currency swap agreement that totals 130 billion yuan (US$18.81 billion). Another government source told the Herald that the idea is to expand the total amount of the swap as well. China has been touting international usage of the yuan currency as a rival to the U.S. dollar, gaining a foothold in South America where it is the largest trade partner for many regional economies.

Nearly 6,000 people failed to declare financial dollar operations, AFIP says
The Federal Administration of Public Income (AFIP) notified 5,780 taxpayers who did not declare MEP dollar operations exceeding US$ 50,000 and failed to pay the corresponding income tax. In a communiqué, the AFIP said it seeks to “avoid several situations that could result in tax non-compliance.”The agency’s databases made it possible to detect the transactions. The MEP dollar is the implicit exchange rate when investors buy shares or bonds in pesos and sell them in dollars in the local market. The government made the decision in the context of other measures regarding the MEP and blue chip swap exchange rates. The due date for the filing of the tax returns and the payment of income tax and personal property tax is on June 30.

"Argentina, 1985" sweeps national film press awards
The successful run of “Argentina, 1985” in international film festivals and award ceremonies continued yesterday at the Argentine film press awards, the Silver Condor Awards. The film directed by Santiago Mitre won 15 awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor, for its lead actor, Ricardo Darín. “Argentina, 1985” was nominated for 20 categories and managed to clinch the vast majority across the board, including Best Fictional Picture, Best Director (Santiago Mitre), Best Actor (Ricardo Darín), Best Supporting Actress (Laura Paredes), Best Script, Costume Design, and Hair and Makeup. The Silver Condor Awards are given by the Argentine Association of Film Reporters, which was founded in 1942 — they’re the longest-running awards in the national industry. Uruguayan's capital reservoir left with 10 days of water
Uruguayans in the capital Montevideo are praying for rain amid a historic drought that has left the city’s main reservoir with only ten days of water left. The latest data shows it has close to 6.2 million cubic meters of water, a far cry from the 60 million monthly average. Meteorologists say it would take 50 millimeters (2 inches) of rain every day of June for reservoir levels to start to recover. Public anger over water shortages is building with street demonstrations planned in the capital on Wednesday. It has said it is assessing additional measures, including a new reservoir to reduce the salinity of local drinking water.
