Morning-after pills can now be sold over the counter
The Argentine Health Ministry announced today that Levonorgestrel morning-after pills will no longer require a doctor’s prescription and will be sold over the counter across the country. “It’s a step towards pharmaceutical care of reproductive health,” said the Argentine Pharmaceutical Confederation (AHE) in a statement released today. The resolution is a further step towards securing sexual and reproductive rights for universal access in the country. Maternal deaths linked to “medical abortion, other abortion, unspecified abortion and unsuccessful attempted abortion” fell from 13 in 2020 to nine in 2021. However, in some places in the country, access to sexual and reproductive rights is still not fully guaranteed.

Bond auctions: government gets AR$791 billion
The Economy Ministry secured AR$773.71 billion in its bond auction yesterday in the second round of May, where it faced maturities for AR$ 447.8 billion. Economy Ministry sources highlighted that “70% of the bond issues were demanded by the private sector, while the remaining 30% corresponded to the public sector”. With this result, net financing so far this year is AR$ 930.56 billion — a 127% refinancing rate. In yesterday’s auction, 980 bids were received for AR$ 1.025 trillion, of which AR$ 674.31 billion were allocated, representing an effective value of AR$ 773.71 billion. Finally, there were two new issues: a CER-adjusted bill, X23N3, maturing on November 23, 2023, and a CER-adjusted bond maturing on June 18, 2025.

South American presidents are gathering in Brasilia on Tuesday for their first summit in almost a decade at the invitation of Brazil’s leftist leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who aims to regain his country’s active role in regional affairs. “We won’t decide anything at tomorrow’s meeting, it is just about discussing possibilities,” Lula told a news conference on Monday with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, on his first visit to Brazil in eight years. An Aerolíneas Argentinas air hostess has been arrested for allegedly making a call warning that a bomb had been placed on the company’s flight from Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini (Ezeiza) airport to Miami on Sunday 21, which was delayed for over nine hours. Nicaragua government accuses Catholic Church of money laundering, freezes accounts
Nicaraguan police said on Saturday they are investigating several dioceses of the Catholic Church for money laundering, a day after local media reported that the bank accounts of parishes in the Central American country had been frozen. Investigations “confirmed the unlawful removal of resources from bank accounts that had been ordered by law to be frozen,” the police said in a statement. Ortega’s government has intensified attacks against the Catholic Church in the wake of 2018 anti-government protests in which some 360 people died after what human rights groups call police repression. The police statement said the bank accounts were linked to religious figures convicted of treason and other crimes, and that the investigations confirmed the funds entered the country irregularly.
