The Argentine government has confirmed that 5,000 tonnes of food are sitting in state warehouses while soup kitchens complain the Human Capital Ministry has not provided them with food aid since President Javier Milei took office in December. In impoverished neighborhoods around the country, many people rely on food from soup kitchens (comedores in Spanish) to eat. Soon after Milei became president, the Human Capital Ministry cut off food deliveries to soup kitchens, arguing that they were auditing the organizations and had identified irregularities. Rodríguez told the Herald her soup kitchen has not received any food since Milei became President. A spokesperson for the Human Capital Ministry told the Herald that the food stash is to be used in disasters and emergencies.

Pope Francis officially launched the Universidad del Sentido (University of Meaning) on Thursday, an autonomous university headquartered in the Vatican that aims to “address the crisis of meaning that ails the modern world.”The launch was the culmination of the International Summit of Meaning, organized by the international educational organization, Scholas Occurrentes, which will also manage the university. The University of Meaning invites us to work with three languages: that of the mind, the hands, and the heart,” said the pontiff when asked by Scholas about the new university’s significance. The summit included university deans from around the world, young community leaders, and artists with the stated objective of “seeking concrete solutions to current and future challenges facing the world.” Participants handed Pope Francis a document with conclusions reached during the summit and proposals for the new university. Pope Francis created Scholas in 2013, as a multicultural educational movement helping young people around the world to search for meaning in their lives. Since 2015, it has worked with a network of universities to develop educational content, as well as research and teacher training.

Tens of thousands of jobs have been cut in construction alone. Milei wants to slash spending to erase an entrenched fiscal deficit and loosen labor protections to spur investment. At least 50,000 construction workers lost their jobs between November and February, with industry bodies saying it could now be closer to 100,000. “We knew that if this government came in, they wouldn’t invest money in civil works,” said Vazquez, who did not vote for Milei. Milei, who has shut or downgraded ministries including the Transport Ministry and Public Works Ministry to cut costs, has repeatedly presented the private sector as a solution, but Camarco counters that it cannot replace state investment.

The government announced a 270% budget increase for national public universities aimed at covering operational costs. Public universities consulted by the Herald said they still haven’t received any official communication on this. Public universities, like the rest of the public sector, started off the year with the same budget they had in 2023, given that Congress did not approve a new national budget for 2024. Hours before the April 23 march to defend public education, all public universities received a 70% budget increase for operating costs for the remainder of the year. The first would issue a public education budget emergency and automatically increase public universities budget, while the second would permanently establish the Teachers’ Incentive National Fund (FONID in Spanish).

President Javier Milei said the May Pact will be postponed until his flagship reform bill known as Ley Bases is approved in Congress. “There won’t be a May Pact because the Ley Bases will not be approved by [May 25],” Milei said Monday night during an interview with TN news channel. Milei had announced his intentions of meeting with all governors and several political leaders on May 25 during his opening speech before Congress. “There’s not enough time for the bill to be approved now,” Milei said. Given the reforms he wants to make are long-term, Milei said, signing the pact later on won’t be a major issue.

Argentina men’s national football team head coach Lionel Scaloni has released the 29-player list for the team’s preparation friendlies ahead of the 2024 Copa América. “The tour before a cup is key, because that’s when you make the last adjustments,” Scaloni told the MLS Español social media channels on Tuesday. Scaloni highlighted that most players are coming from a highly demanding season, so his work will focus on team-building. “When teams face Argentina, they face the champions, but it changes nothing for us,” said Scaloni. “Wearing this kit means we go out to win every game and that won’t change.”Argentina is the Copa América defending champion, after winning the title in Brazil in 2021.

He was born in approximately 1422 and died in 1491: when the language spoken in England was only just recognizably the English language we use today. Myriad books delve into different aspects of the English language today. I quoted Richelieu above as having said that language “describes good usage and defends this from all causes of corruption.” But language is organic. There is nothing teleological about language change — it merely happens. In the same way that the tide comes and goes, so language changes, but the tide never gets anywhere, never stops, it just ebbs and flows.

Although there can be more than one union per working sector, only one is formally authorized to participate in collective labor negotiations. Labor conditions — known as convenio colectivo de trabajo — from a certain sector can only improve compared to what the Labor Contract Law states,” he explained. How do labor negotiations work? Although these meetings can address specific labor conditions, updating salaries has become increasingly prevalent in recent years due to sky-rocketing inflation.
