The Human Capital Ministry won an appeal in federal court on Tuesday against a ruling that obligated the government to renew food deliveries to soup kitchens, which have largely been halted since December. The next day, prosecutors Andrés Nazer and María Paloma Ochoa gave a five-day deadline for the ministry to deliver the food to the registered soup kitchens and demanded precise information on the stash. Some media outlets reported that this implies the Human Capital Ministry is not required to hand over the food, but Grabois posted on X that this was not the case. They have 36 hours or they’ll be in contempt of court.”The Herald reached out to the Human Capital Ministry but did not receive an immediate response. As some soup kitchens are managed by people from social movements that oppose Milei’s administration, social leaders say the decision to discontinue the aid is an attack on them.

Nora Cortiñas, a historic human rights activist who co-founded the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo (founding branch), remains in intensive care with a pulmonary infection after undergoing a hernia operation last week. “She is in intensive care, where access is restricted and sometimes we, her close family, have to take turns [to see her].”“She is in no condition to receive visitors. The text also pointed to her 40-year-long fight to bring justice for those who were forcibly disappeared. She also expanded her activism to other areas regarding human rights, such as the right to safe and free legal abortion and the fight against police and gender-based violence. Cortiñas was last seen in public on March 24 at the National Day of Memory, Truth, and Justice march.

“Our first government milestone would be the outcome of the Ley Bases. It could go well, or it may not be approved,” Milei told LN+ news channel last Thursday. “After that milestone is reached, we will have to evaluate the results, and the entire cabinet will be under analysis. A potential government turnover could take place after that, and, if approved, Milei’s “May Pact” would become the law of the land as early as June. Despite the rumors and public statements, there are no certainties regarding how or when the cabinet reshuffle will be carried out, only that it will potentially happen after the Ley Bases is debated.

There has been a widespread search in San Juan province for German tourist Julia Horn since she went missing last Thursday while trekking in the mountainous area called Cerro Tres Marías. However, the search was suspended on Monday after a body matching her description was found in the area. The 19-year-old was last seen on May 16 at around 11 a.m. when a security camera recorded her getting off a bus alone in El Castillito and heading to the Tres Marías trekking trail. She was supposed to return to Germany on Sunday, she told San Juan’s Canal 8 news channel last week during a brief interview about her work in the province. Its peak is over 1000 meters above sea level and is one of the most popular mountainous areas in San Juan.

President Javier Milei will travel to San Francisco this week before attending the inauguration of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele in San Salvador on June 1. There, he will meet with SpaceX and Twitter CEO Elon Musk, along with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. It will be Milei’s fourth trip to the United States since assuming office and his second encounter with Musk this month. Milei previously signaled that he would be making the trip when he endorsed a tweet from a popular libertarian account confirming separate sitdowns with Zuckerberg and Musk. Musk praised Milei after the libertarian firebrand defeated then-Economy Minister Sergio Massa in November’s runoff election, claiming “prosperity is ahead for Argentina.” According to Milei, Musk has also expressed interest in mining the country’s lithium reserves.

Last week, President Javier Milei embarked on a trip to Spain. The president met with Spanish business leaders, but not with the King of Spain, nor — unsurprisingly — with Pedro Sánchez. Three UCR party deputies have filed a lawsuit against Milei, accusing him of defrauding the state by using public funds for a private trip. Appearances and statements that are more reminiscent of an alt-right influencer than an actual head of state. It’s time to behave less like an influencer and more like a president.

“Grab a shovel” or “pick up a shovel” is a pretty cutting and imperative way of saying “stop faffing around and get to work.” Make an effort. Tomarse el palo means — well, to piss off, and has the same versatility. You can unleash it as an admonishment and tell someone to go away (tomate el palo or the shorter tomátelas). Or, as was the case at the Herald, use it to describe the fact that you have to leave immediately and in a hurry (me tengo que tomar el palo). What assuages my conscience is that a translation trouble reader won’t reply to “Tomate el palo!” with a “Muchas gracias!”Share your thoughts and translation hang-ups with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram!

Defense Minister Luis Petri has backed a celebration held by former students of the ex-Navy School of Mechanics (ESMA, by its Spanish initials). The informal event took place on the ex-ESMA grounds last week, celebrating the Navy close to what had been Argentina’s largest clandestine detention center during its last military dictatorship. The videos were uploaded to a Facebook group for former ESMA students who graduated in 1978, two years after the dictatorship began.

Javier Milei pledged to expand the May Pact with provincial governors and lower taxes once Congress approves the Ley Bases and the fiscal package. Its task, he added, would be to write bills to flesh out the May Pact. The president also pledged to lower taxes, starting with the PAIS tax he called a “distorting tax that threatens production and economic growth.” His supporters chanted “freedom, freedom, freedom” immediately after. Two demonstrators were arrested and two journalists from the La Voz del Interior newspaper were reached by tear gas. Milei finished his speech by asking God bless Argentines, and that “heavenly forces” accompany them before shouting out his trademark phrase: “Long live freedom, dammit!”

Buenos Aires Archbishop Jorge Ignacio García Cuerva delivered a strong homily for the May 25 religious service known as Te Deum, saying that the poor are “making a great effort” to make it through the current crisis and urging people not to “play dumb” regarding their assistance. President Javier Milei and Vice President Victoria Villarruel were among those present at the ceremony. The Te Deum is a traditional religious service held on May 25 in the Buenos Aires Cathedral meant to honor the annivesary of Argentina’s first constitutional government in 1810. The Buenos Aires archbishop is in charge of the ceremony, which is attended by the president and his cabinet, as well as high ranking military officials and BA City authorities. After the Te Deum, Milei left for Córdoba to attend an official act to celebrate May 25.

Key indicators released over the past week show slumps across the board, from consumer spending to manufacturing. Meanwhile, the informal dollar exchange rate, or “blue dollar,” reached an all-time peak of AR$1,300 on Thursday. This confirms the economy has shrunk for two consecutive quarters, meeting the technical definition of a recession. Argentina’s GDP fell by 1.6% in 2023, and the International Monetary Fund forecast a 2.5% drop for 2024. The remaining 80% must be sold in the official exchange market, meaning that sales bolster the Central Bank’s international reserves.
