Egyptian and French air forces have carried out a joint air drill at an Egyptian air base, as part of the latest step in the General Command of the Armed Forces plan to exchange experience with friendly countries. The exercise covered attacking and defending vital targets, and air clashes between the two sides and using the latest models of multi-tasking fighters for both sides. The training aimed to exchange tactical experiences in planning and in styles of command and control. These exercises come in light of the growing partnership and military cooperation between the Egyptian and French armed forces.

Egypt’s Al-Azhar Observatory for Countering Extremism has condemned the raising of the rainbow flag representing the LGBT community by the US embassy in Bahrain. Bahraini parliament members had issued a statement earlier denouncing the incident as well. The Al-Azhar Observatory stated that confronting “the spread of these crimes is a legal and societal duty”, and referred the need to include it in educational curricula. Homosexuality is a behavior rejected by all religions, Al-Azhar warned. It stressed the importance of the role that families, education and cultural institutions play in confronting campaigns which aim to distort Islamic and Arab culture and civilization to accept behavior forbidden by religion.

In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said 39 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 15,510. Egypt has so far received millions of coronavirus vaccine doses and is planning to locally produce the first batch of the Chinese Sinovac vaccine this month. As the country has started its vaccination campaign in January, more than 3.5 million citizens have been vaccinated, according to Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed earlier this week. Also, the ministry started vaccinating homebound citizens against coronavirus through sending medical teams to their houses.

In a report on the achievements during the rule of President Sisi from 2014 till 2020, the ministry added that work is progressing for 11 more road axis including Helwan, Dayrut, Daraw, Aswan reservoir, al-Fashn, Abu Tig, Central Delta, North Luxor axis, Shubrakhit, Samanoud, and Manfalut at a cost of LE20 billion.

Egypt may witness a fourth wave of coronavirus in September, warned Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Population for Preventive Medicine in Egypt Mohamed Abdel Fattah. He also assured that the third wave is receding and infections are declining. Coronavirus cases will decrease by the end of August to their lowest rate, Fattah said. The ministry also aims to vaccinate at least 70 percent of citizens, and that seven million have thus far been registered on the vaccine reservation website. Abdel Fattah added that all 179 international vaccination centers in Egypt have been provided with the vaccine for travelers outside Egypt.

Egypt and Sudan issued a joint statement on Wednesday after foreign and irrigation ministers from both countries held a meeting on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, announcing that the negotiations with Ethiopia have reached another deadlock. A high-level Egyptian delegation with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdel Aaty visited Khartoum on Wednesday to hold intensive talks with the Sudan, including Sudanese Foreign Minister Maryam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi and Sudanese Irrigation Minister Yasser Abbas, as well as technical and legal experts from both sides. The ministers expressed deep concern about the potential consequences of filling and operating the GERD unilaterally and without a legally binding agreement regulating the dam’s operation while protecting the rights and water interests of Sudan and Egypt. They also touched on the the importance of concerted international efforts to reach a settlement to the dispute that takes into account the interests of the three countries. And the statement said that the talks discussed bilateral ties between Egypt and Sudan, which both sides were eager to strengthen.

Also, Egyptian and Sudanese water and legal experts took part in the meeting. Egypt reiterates rejection of potential Ethiopian unilateral actions on GERD, the statement said, reaffirming objection to Ethiopia’s planned step to unilateral implement the second phase of GERD filling this Summer. In 2015, the three countries signed the Declaration of Principles, per which the downstream countries [Egypt and Sudan] should not be negatively affected by the construction of the dam. This is not a threat.”Sudan, as well has warned more than once of filling the GERD before reaching a legal binding agreement.
