Misr for Sound and Light, a holding company for tourism affiliated with the Ministry of Public Business, and Orascom Investment Holding have signed a contract for the development and co-management of sound and light shows and the exhibition area at the Giza pyramids. Minister of the Public Business Sector Hisham Tawfik said that this contract also comes out of the ministry’s desire to improve all services provided to Egyptian and foreign tourists visiting the pyramids. Tawfik added that the Misr for Sound and Light company has offered an international bid for the development process and four companies submitted its offers, including Orascom Investment which won the bid. He noted that the contract term will last over 15 years, under which Misr for Sound and Light will obtain 17 percent of the project’s revenues, with a minimum of LE36 million. “We are proud to sign this contract with the Ministry of Business Sector, and to implement this national project,” Orascom’s managing director and billionaire Naguib Sawiris said.

Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport Tuesday that it has received its first flight from Fly Dubai coming from Dubai, UAE, carrying 41 passengers. This comes after the announcement of cooperation between Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport and Fly Dubai, so that Sharm el-Sheikh Airport becomes the company’s second destination in Egypt following the Borg al-Arab International Airport in Alexandria. The plane was received with water sprayed on it, an international tradition to welcome the arrival of the first flight. A Public Relations team from the airport greeted the passengers with flowers and souvenirs, and facilitated all arrival procedures while adhering to precautionary measures followed at the airport to maintain the safety and health of passengers. Cairo International Airport worker who reportedly harassed a passenger has been suspended from work until the investigation concludes, the Cairo Air Port Company said in a statement. A video of the incident uploaded online on June 14 showed a female passenger arriving on a Beirut flight about being filmed by an employee in Terminal Three at Cairo Airport. The company stressed it would swiftly take action against any violations and guarantee the safety of all passengers.

Egyptian Public Prosecutor Hamada al-Sawy met with Italian Ambassador Giampaolo Cantini at the headquarters of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Cairo to hand over to Cantini two official copies of the Public Prosecution’s reports on the murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni, in Arabic and Italian. The Egyptian Public Prosecution concluded its handling of the case by a temporarily report stating that there is no reason to file a criminal case due to the lack of information on a perpetrator, and assigned research authorities to intensify its investigations. During the meeting, the Public Prosecutor stressed the necessity of submitting all the papers handed over to the Italian ambassador before the court hearing the case in Italy. The Egyptian Public Prosecution and the Italian General Prosecution of Rome issued a joint statement in December regarding the latest developments in the 2016 killing of the Italian PhD student, Giulio Regeni, in Cairo. The Regeni case has strained ties between Egypt and Italy, which previously recalled its ambassador in Cairo over the case.

Egypt’s Ministry of Transport plans to manufacture and assemble ten new air-conditioned trains for Cairo’s third metro line locally, at the SEMAF factory of the Arab Organization for Industrialization, the ministry announced in a statement. The ministry explained that the components for two of the ten vehicles have been received by Egypt. They will also be equipped with LCD screens for trip information and advertising, as well as security cameras installed at the front of each train. A screen above the doors will inform passengers of the car’s name of the final station before they board, and wheelchair space has been generously allocated. Moreover, each vehicle will have a route map that shows where the train currently is to accommodate the heading impaired.

In another step toward repairing Egyptian-Qatari relations, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has sent a letter to the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The letter was delivered by Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, during his visit to Doha on Monday. Sisi added that Egypt has a desire to settle all outstanding issues, and he invited the Emir of Qatar to visit Cairo at the earliest opportunity. The resumption of ties came after nearly four years of a row between Qatar and Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the UAE over Qatar’s alleged terrorism sponsorship and its close relations with Iran. The countries agreed to reconcile during the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)’s summit meeting in al-Ula, Saudi Arabia in January.

Egypt will manufacture four types of vaccines against the coronavirus in the last quarter of 2022, head of the Chamber of Pharmaceutical Industry in Egypt, Ahmed al-Ezaby, said. Ezaby explained that Egypt contracted with China to manufacture the Chinese vaccine “Sinovac” through the VACSERA company, and then contracted with two companies to produce the Russian vaccine. Egypt has continued to open the Rafah border crossing to receive wounded citizens from the Gaza Strip and to cross stranded people from both sides, in addition to bringing aid, equipment, construction vechiles and Egyptian technical staff based on Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s orders. The government has provided administrative and medical staff at the crossing to facilitate procedures for receiving wounded citizens and their companions, and has provided a number of ambulances to transport them to Egyptian hospitals to receive treatment. The government announced that the crossing would start operating exceptionally from May 16, confirming the readiness of the crossing to operate at any time according to developments of the situation.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Monday met with his Qatari counterpart Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani in Doha. Egypt’s Health Ministry on Monday confirmed 613 new coronavirus cases, bringing the country’s total up to 273,795. The total number of COVID-19-related deaths has now reached 15,654 nationwide, after the ministry announced 31 deaths. And 701 patients were discharged from quarantine at isolation hospitals, raising Egypt’s total number of fully-recovered cases to 201,739. Egypt is currently using China’s Sinopharm vaccine and the UK’s AstraOxford vaccine. The Ministry of Health announced that it will soon begin producing Russia’s Sputnik V and China’s Sinovac vaccines at Vacsera.
