Egyptian singer and actor Tamer Hosny has participated in the “Not Just a Refugee” program by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as part of the World Refugee Day on June 20 each year. The “Not just a refugee” program highlights the stories of refugees and their different skills to showcase the role they play in Egyptian society. Hosny visited a medical fabrics factory that embraces Egyptians, refugees and migrants of different nationalities. The day was special for the Egyptian, Sudanese and South Sudanese workers, who were overjoyed at seeing their favorite star giving them a special visit. “Today I am unusually happy because I was able to meet the artist Tamer Hosny, the beloved of the Sudanese people,” Mahdi from Sudan said.

Egypt’s Health Ministry on Monday confirmed 509 new coronavirus cases, bringing the country’s total number of confirmed cases up to 277,797. The total number of COVID-19-related deaths has now reached 15,898 nationwide, after the ministry announced 39 deaths. 440 patients were discharged from quarantine at isolation hospitals, raising Egypt’s total number of fully-recovered cases to 206,053. A country-wide partial lockdown aimed at curbing cases that has been in place since May 6 ended on Tuesday. Egypt is currently using China’s Sinopharm vaccine and the UK’s AstraOxford vaccine, and it has plans to soon begin locally manufacturing China’s Sinovac vaccine and Russia’s Sputnik-V.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Health in Egypt Khaled Megahed announced Sunday that Egypt is set to produce its first COVID-19 vaccine within a few days, from the VACSERA production complex’s branch branch in Agouza in cooperation with the Chinese company Sinovac. Megahid pointed out that the VACSERA factories complex manufactures many vaccines, and not just for the coronavirus. Zayed visited on Sunday VACSERA’s factory complex in 6th of October City, following up on the final preparations of the new production lines to manufacture vaccines. The costs of factory complex’s equipment reached $17 million, while construction cost LE80 million. The Ministry of Health announced that 40 million doses of the Chinese Sinovac vaccine will be produced in Egypt this year through VACSERA’s factories, with the first batch of two million doses scheduled within a month from now.

The Director of the fund for Drug Control and Treatment of Addiction (FDCTA) Amr Othman revealed the details of the law on the dismissal of employees who use drugs and steps for its implementation. Its objective regarding the dismissal of drug users employees is to protect citizens and public interest, Othman said. However, Othman said that anyone who voluntarily submits to treatment will be allowed to return. Othman explained that the treatment is free of charge for any employee who voluntarily applies to the fund and in complete confidentiality. However those who continue taking drugs after the six months grace period will be dismissed with no chance of return.

The cabinet has revealed the details of the government’s initiative to license tuk-tuks and replace them with minivans. Spokesperson for the Cabinet Nader Saad explained, during a telephone interview with presenter Azza Mostafa on the “Tahrir Hall” program that the number of tuk-tuks in Egypt amounts to nearly 2.5 million, only 10 percent of which have obtained an official license. Saad said that among the reasons for not licensing tuk-tuks is the tendency to use them in criminal acts. The official registration of tuk-tuk provides a complete inventory of the data of its owners and comes with advantages such as health insurance and a pension for its owners. “The initiative also allows to replace a tuk-tuk with a minivan, after evaluating its condition and deducting its price from the value of the minivan,” said Saad.
