As a consequence of the government’s timely and prudent policy response, coupled with IMF support, the economy has exhibited resilience, with growth expected at 2.8 percent for FY 2020/21. “Going forward, continuing to preserve economic stability and reduce public debt will be important. The IMF will continue to support Egypt’s reform efforts as specific policy measures to support these objectives are defined and implemented.

CAIRO – 15 July 2021: The Egyptian Exchange (EGX) decided that starting from Monday 19th of July till Saturday 24th of July will be a holiday at EGX for the celebration of Eid al-Adha Al Mubarak & 23rd of July. It honours the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to God's command. On Wednesday, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) decided to suspend the work of all banks operating in Egypt, starting from Monday, July 19, on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. The Egyptian Exchange (EGX) ended Thursday’s session on mixed note, adding around LE 1.65 billion to market capitalization, amid Arab and foreign purchases. The benchmark EGX30 decreased 0.39 percent, while EGX 50 hiked 0.77 percent, EGX 70 climbed 2.18 percent, and EGX 100 jumped 1.46 percent.

CAIRO – 15 July 2021: The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) released Thursday the annual report on foreigners working in the private sector in Egypt for the year 2020. The number of foreigners who began working in Egypt for the first time is 4,202 being 36.8% of expats working in Egypt's private sector. Non-Arab Asians are the largest group with 42.2%, majorly from Bangladesh (26.1% of that group), and India (24.8%). As for Arab countries, the figure is 22.5 percent with Syrians and Palestinians being 22.5% and 15.6%, respectively. The sectors they work in are manufacturing (33.3%), creative economy (16.1%), petroleum and mining (11.9%), and education (11.4%).

CAIRO – 15 July 2021: The Cairo Criminal Court sentenced on Thursday a male dentist to 16 years in prison over harassing men including celebrities in his clinic. The dentist faced accusations of indecent assault, which is less severe than rape, and of harassment. The prosecution said it arrested the defendant, interrogated him and showed him the technical evidence he faces. It added that it found on his phone other technical evidence that endorses the accusations. Last year, the Egyptian government ratified a draft law that guarantees the secrecy of testimonies made by victims of harassment, rape and sexual assault.

CAIRO – 15 July 2021: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli held Wednesday a meeting with Scatec CEO Raymond Carlsen and the representatives of Metito as well as Orascom Construction to examine introducing desalination plants powered by renewable energy. Within 18 months, 19 desalination plants worth a total of LE11 billion and whose total daily production is 550,000 cubic meters will be inaugurated. Egypt is expected to have 65 desalination plants distributed among six governorates that are Matrouh, South Sinai, Suez, Ismailiyah, North Sinai, and the Red Sea. The total daily production of those is 750,000 cubic meters. North Sinai and South Sinai will be home to 21 and nine plants whose capacity per day is 20,000 cubic meters and 75,000 cubic meters, respectively.

CAIRO – 15 July 2021: Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea stated Thursday that export contracts worth $26 million are the outcome of commercial delegation visits to Cameron and Senegal. Both fellow countries will be importing from Egypt cement, clinker, insulation materials, fertilizers, chemicals, packaging materials, engineering industries, food products, sanity ware, plastic pipes, carpets, and irrigation systems. The minister added that the value of Egyptian exports to Senegal rose from $35 million and $200 million and to Cameron from $42 million to $125 million. The visit, which took place on July 4-9, to both states, witnessed the participation of 43 companies, and 65 businessmen. It included 220 meetings in Cameron, and 250 in Senegal.

The Ethiopian army has pledged to secure the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) until its completion and to confront any force that might attempt to invade the area. Ethiopian News Agency reported that leaders and members of the 22nd Army Division announced that their unit is working to protect the area and the dam’s construction schedule. The Division’s Deputy Commander Azineh Shimelis said that his forces will provide all necessary protection to the construction project, including its supplies. Shimelis added that another task assigned to the division will confront any forces that attempt to enter the area. The disputed dam is the largest hydroelectric project in Africa, with a cost of more than US$4 billion.
