The Ford government plans to appeal an Ontario court decision striking down a law that limited wage increases for public sector workers, more commonly known as Bill 124. Koehnen added he is "mindful" of an appeal court ruling that "judges ought not to see themselves as finance ministers." Instead, it appears Ontario was reluctant to take that position because it could lead to strikes, the decision said. In a statement following the decision, NDP Leader Peter Tabuns said, "My message to Ford is simple: do not appeal this decision." In September, the Financial Accountability Office said Bill 124 would save the province $9.7 billion in public-sector salaries and wages.

Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was at the White House on this date in 1989 where he gave President George H.W. Bush and senior members of his Administration an in-person briefing about his recently concluded talks with Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow. Bush, who would depart for Malta the following day for his first talks with the Soviet leader since becoming President, had requested the briefing from Canada’s Prime Minister. Diplomats from Canada’s Embassy in D.C. later filed a report on the Bush-Mulroney discussions. The Prime Minister appealed strongly to the President, as leader of the Alliance, to be guided by his own gut instinct but to seize the historic moment and extend a hand to President Gorbachev, especially on arms control.”

No one size fits all solution to protect farm soil healthGrain farmers know soil health is important. Ottawa—There is no one size fits all approach to protecting soil health that will work on all farms across the country, says Jason Lenz, Chairman of the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Crops (CRSC). Farmers know the importance of soil health and have adopted practices and invested in technology to improve it while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Lenz told the Senate agriculture committee. There are many ways to achieve soil health and “certain practices should not be arbitrarily dismissed as inadequate or a specific practice selected as the only solution,” he said. No-till contributes significantly to carbon sequestration and soil health and helps producers’ financial viability and risk management goals.

The Public Health Agency of Canada said Canadian studies have found immunization coverage declined during the pandemic for the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. Nova Scotia Health said its last report on childhood vaccines was completed three years ago, and numbers have fallen during the pandemic.
