Several Tunisian traders protested outside the Bengardane municipality headquarters, located near the Libyan border in southern Tunisia, to voice their frustration over the ongoing suspension of their primary commercial activities. The protestors are angry about the tightening of goods movement by Libyan authorities, which has severely disrupted cross-border trade. He emphasized that the halt in trade, which began last March, has plunged many in Bengardane and other nearby towns into severe economic hardship. Since March, Libyan authorities have banned Tunisian travelers—particularly those driving cars—from transporting goods into Tunisia. This action is part of Libya’s broader campaign against smuggling, which has been detrimental to its own economy.

Algeria’s National Company of Rail Transport (SNTF) is spearheading a major rail revitalization project, aiming for full connectivity for the country’s 47 million people by 2035. The project’s initial phase will see the acquisition of 400 train coaches at an estimated cost of $1.03 billion, according to SNTF’s transport manager, Sifian Aibash. Already, Algiers has issued an international tender for the supply of passenger rolling stock with specifications for electric trains equipped for use on a standard gauge railway. Russia sent 200 military instructors to protect the president of Equatorial Guinea, the latest African country to foster military ties with Moscow. The Russians are training the Equatorial Guinean elite soldiers, Reuters reported, adding that the deployment points to Moscow’s offensive to strengthen its foothold in the Sahel and West Africa where military juntas distanced themselves from the West and edge closer towards Putin. Relations between the two countries date back to the 1970s when they signed fisheries and military cooperation agreements. Russia’s recent deployment is seen as part of a broader strategy to strengthen its military influence in the continent where the west has been in retreat.

Spain has acquired four seismometers under a lease-to-own contract, for a total cost of nearly 500,000 euros. These devices will be used to study the seismic activity in the Strait of Gibraltar area, where the future railway tunnel connecting Morocco to Spain is planned to pass, Spanish portal Vozpopuli reported. The connection points are expected to be at Punta Paloma in Tarifa and Malabata in the Bay of Tangier. According to SECEGSA, this infrastructure, with a length of 42 kilometers, including 27.8 kilometers underwater, would allow, in the medium term, the transit of more than 13 million tons of goods and 12.8 million passengers per year. The project is estimated to cost at least $6 billion as it gained a renewed interest after Morocco, Spain and Portugal joined forces to organize the World Cup in 2030.

In Libya, oil infrastructure is once again being used as leverage to pressure the Tripoli Government. On Tuesday, residents of Zintan shut down the oil valves in protest over the kidnapping last Wednesday of Brigadier General Mustafa al-Whayshi, the director of the Central Security Department within the intelligence service. This refinery processes around 350,000 barrels of crude per day—approximately a third of Libya’s total production—before it is transported to Italy. Protesters also shut down access roads to Zintan, burning tires as a show of defiance. They have demanded the immediate release of al-Whayshi, threatening to escalate their actions if he is not freed.

With the rapid rise of fintech innovations and digital payment solutions, one might think so. It means providing choice and then walking along the digital journey with customers as they choose to move from cash to digital payment options. Around 20 million adults in this country prefer cash transactions. While access is important, it would be a mistake to assume that just because someone has a bank account, they will always prefer digital transactions. We are seeing a trend towards digital payment adoption, but it has not yet tipped the scales away from this cash majority.

In the 13th - off debutant Andile Simelane - Samson lofted one over wide long off for his best-looking six of the evening. He kept his foot firmly on the pedal to keep scoring at over 200 as India set themselves up for another outrageous total even by T20 standards. At 162/2 in 14 overs, Aiden Markram was running out of ideas and bowlers to stop the carnage but the next 12 deliveries gave South Africa a small chance to claw back. First, Maharaj had Tilak Varma caught by Tristan Stubbs at deep mid-wicket, and then Samson found a deep fielder trying to hit his 11th six, in the 15th over. India's middle and lower-order then failed to make the most of the launchpad provided to them as the visitors scored just 27 runs for the loss of four wickets in the last four overs to finish with 202/8.
