Fair seeks to help VN firms capitalise on global recovery
HCM CITY — The annual HCM City Export Fair to be held in HCM City from May 8 to 11 is expected to help Vietnamese firms get new export orders and customers, the city Department of Industry and Trade has said. Việt Nam's reputable export firms will be in attendance. Buyers in major markets such as the US, China, South Korea and Japan have run out of inventories and are placing orders again, he said. He suggested firms to seek new export markets such as the Middle East, Australia and Canada. By participating in the fair, his company and others hope to seek opportunities for expanding into new markets, he added.

Rental rates for industrial land expected to inch higher
HCM CITY — Rental rates for industrial land in Việt Nam are forecast to slightly increase in the coming time, experts said. For the industrial land market, industrial land rental rates in tier 1 markets of the northern region experienced a slight increase of 1.2 per cent quarter-on-quarter and 7.8 per cent year-on-year, averaging US$133 per sq.m. Meanwhile, industrial land rental rates in tier 1 markets of the southern region remained stable at $189 per sq.m, showing year-on-year growth of 2.4 per cent. However, in the southern market, due to relatively limited industrial land availability, the occupancy rate remained stable at 92 per cent with an absorption area of just over 20 hectares. The average rental price for ready-built warehouses and factories in tier 1 markets reached $4.7 and $4.9 per sq.m per month, respectively.

Automobile industry reported strong sales in Q1
HÀ NỘI — April 2024 marks the second consecutive month the automobile industry reported significant growth since the beginning of the year, according to a report by the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO). Last month, 25,700 vehicles were produced and assembled in Việt Nam, an increase of 4 per cent compared to the previous month (24,800 vehicles), marking a comeback from a sharp decline in sales before Tết. The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) said its members had been reporting improved sales in March and April. The previous three implementations have produced positive outcomes for the industry with owners enjoying a 5-6 per cent reduction in total costs. The industry set a sales record in 2022 with half a million vehicles sold throughout the year.

Hanoi among world’s 100 smartest cities
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, was named the world’s 97th smartest city, moving up three places from its ranking in 2023, according to the 2024 Smart City Index. Hanoi has eyed fast and sustainable development in the direction of green urban area and smart and modern city by 2025. Together with accelerating the building of the e-administration, it has applied scientific and technological advancements to handle urgent issues, forming elements to develop a smart city. The 2024 Smart City Index was produced by the World Competitiveness Centre under the Swiss business school Institute for Management Development. Newly established firms increase in first four months
These new businesses registered a total of 353,800 workers, a growth of 6.8 per cent over the same period last year. The average registered capital of a new enterprise in the first four months of 2024 rose by 5.7 per cent year on year to VNĐ9.9 billion. In April, Việt Nam had more than 15,300 newly established enterprises with a registered capital of VNĐ175.8 trillion, up by 8.4 per cent in number of businesses and 55 per cent in registered capital month on month. The average registered capital of a new enterprise in April stood at VNĐ11.5 billion, up 42.9 per cent over the previous month. Of which, 7,618 businesses registered in April to temporarily suspend business, an increase of 84.1 per cent compared to the previous month.

Malaysia's aviation industry recovers from COVID-19

The Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) said in a statement on May 2 that the increase was primarily driven by international air transport, which surged by 39.9% year on year to 11.9 million passengers. Quarterly domestic air passenger volume, however, dipped 2.3% year on year to 10.7 million. MAVCOM Executive Chairman Saripuddin Kasim said the aviation sector is on a robust path to recovery. Airlines have shifted their attention to restoring and adding new international destinations in their networks, and the establishment of 30-day visa exemptions for tourists from China and India has provided a conducive environment for the accelerated return of international air travel./.

(Photo: baodautu.vn)The Government has proposed extending the cut in value-added tax (VAT) from 10% to 8% on specific groups of goods and services from July 1 until the end of the year to support business and production activities.In its proposal sent to the National Assembly, the Ministry of Finance held that it is necessary to study and propose relevant measures for 2024, including extending the 2% reduction in VAT, the payment deadline for corporate income tax, special consumption tax and personal income tax, and reduction of several fees and land rental, which were applied in 2023.With the 2% tax cut in the second half of the year, the State budget will be slashed by some 24 trillion VND (nearly 994.7 million USD), or around 4 trillion VND per month.The tax incentive reduced the government revenues by more than 23.48 trillion VND in H1.Highlighting the formidable challenges to the economy brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and natural disasters, the Government said that a wide range of financial measures were implemented during 2020-2023, worth some 700 trillion VND, to prop up the economy./.

Vietnam asks Cambodia to share detailed information on canal project

Vietnam asks Cambodia to share detailed information about the project, including the project feasibility report, conduct joint research on its impacts, and apply the International Mekong River Commission (MRC)'s guidelines for transboundary impact assessment to achieve common understanding of the project's transboundary impacts and appropriate mitigation measures. The Funan - Techo canal will transfer water from the Bassac River, a tributary of the Mekong River, to Kep port located outside the basin. As information about the operation of the three planned sluices in the project is lacking, Vietnam hopes that Cambodia will early share detailed information about the purpose, design and operation of the project. Vietnam also wishes that Cambodia will participate in joint research on the project's impacts and reach agreement on suitable impact monitoring and mitigation measures.
