LOS ANGELES — Crime is trending down in Los Angeles, with homicides alone on track to fall 15% compared to last year, but newly sworn-in LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell is concerned that statistics aren’t telling the full story. In the 15 years he has been away from the LAPD, the department’s ranks have dropped from nearly 10,000 to 8,800. A recent class at the academy numbered just 23 — less than half the enrollment during the years when McDonnell was last at the LAPD. “We also can’t get away from the fact that we need more good people to be interested in this job and to come on the job,” McDonnell said. … For every statistic, there are lived experiences, people whose lives have been upended, whose sense of safety has been shattered.”_____©2024 Los Angeles Times.

The S & P 500 sank 1.4% and was heading for a losing week and its worst day since October. That’s made the broad stock market look more expensive by a range of measures, which has critics calling for at least a fade. Stocks had been broadly roaring since Election Day, when Trump’s victory sent a jolt through financial markets worldwide. That's forced traders to recalibrate how much relief the Federal Reserve could provide for the economy next year through cuts to interest rates. On Thursday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell suggested the U.S. central bank will be cautious about future decisions on interest rates.

The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has taken steps to put Alphabet's Google under formal federal supervision, the Washington Post reported, potentially mounting yet another regulatory challenge for the Big Tech giant. Google has fiercely resisted the idea over months of highly secretive talks, the report said on Thursday, citing two people familiar with the discussions. Federal supervision status can allow regulators access to a company's internal records. CFPB and Alphabet declined to comment. Google already faces government action that could force the company to divest parts of its business, as well as a court order to open up its mobile app store to competition.
