Deloitte is planning to let go more than a hundred of its consultants across the country, taking its total number of redundancies over the past year or so to above 1,000. The Big Four firm informed staff on Tuesday that it was mulling another round of lay-offs in its advisory business, which it blamed on “an ongoing challenging market”. In February Deloitte let go 100 people, which followed a round of 800 redundancies in September 2023. The Financial Times, which first reported the latest cuts, said that another 180 jobs are now at risk. A spokeswoman for Deloitte confirmed that staff had been told of a “proposed restructuring”, but did not confirm the number of people set to be affected.

US justice department officials plan to ask a judge to force Google to sell off its Chrome browser to dismantle the monopoly it has over the internet search market, in a major intervention against one of the world’s biggest tech companies. The Department of Justice (DoJ) last month filed court papers saying it is considering enforcing “structural remedies” to prevent Google from using some its products. Google has said it will challenge any case by the DoJ and that proposals marked an “overreach” by the government that would harm consumers. The case against Google was filed under the first Donald Trump administration and continued under Joe Biden. Jeremy Clarkson joined farmers protesting against changes to agricultural inheritance tax in London on Tuesday, 19 November. The former Top Gear presenter and now farm owner addressed his previous comments in a 2021 interview with The Times, in which he said that avoiding inheritance tax was “the critical thing” in his decision to buy land. Heading to the Westminster demonstration, the Clarkson’s Farm star said: “The only reason I said that is because I actually bought the farm because I wanted to shoot, but you can't go around saying ‘Oh, I wanted to shoot’ because then you get shouted at by animal enthusiasts. “I jokingly said, oh, it's just inheritance tax and now of course it's come back to bite me on the arse, but it doesn't really matter because we're here to support farmers, we’re not talking about me.”

Texas Education Board Supports New Bible Curriculum Controversial plan sparks debate over religious teachings in public schoolsA contentious proposal is brewing in Texas as the state education officials take steps toward introducing Bible lessons to the curriculum for kindergarten through fifth grade. During preliminary votes, the Texas State Board of Education showed strong support, adopting new standards focused on the Bible's teachings amid rising concerns from various sectors about the balance of religious instruction in public education. Under the proposed curriculum, lessons would explore principles such as the Golden Rule found within the Bible and apply these teachings to broader educational concepts, including art appreciation and moral teachings. An educational program like this, born from legislation mandatorily urging the Texas Education Agency to craft its educational materials, caters to classical learning perspectives which some argue is necessary to restore educational standards. Such criticism aligns with broader national discussions on how religious content should be approached within public education systems.

Thousands of farmers gathered in central London on Tuesday in the biggest show of opposition to a policy announced by Britain’s center-left Labour government since it won power in July. Angry at inheritance taxation changes outlined in last month’s budget by the chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, protesters carried placards reading “No farmers no food,” while a procession of tractors drove past Parliament. While the immediate catalyst for the demonstration was the tax change, it also reflected a broader sense of grievance among some of those who live in the countryside who accuse successive governments of betraying their interests, particularly in the wake of Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union. The change under Ms. Reeves’s plan applies to people who inherit agricultural assets worth more than a million pounds, about $1.3 million. They were previously exempt from inheritance tax, but will have to pay it at 20 percent — half the standard rate — from April 2026.
