The series of damaging climbdowns have left Mr Starmer’s political authority weakened, his judgment under scrutiny and the positions of those around him in jeopardy. Speaking to broadcasters on June 27, Mr Starmer said the adjustments were “the right thing to do”, giving the package of welfare cuts “the right balance”. A poll for the LabourList website found 40 per cent of Labour members want Ms Reeves ousted. One MP said Mr Starmer should replace Mr McSweeney and Ms Reeves, or at least strip away some of their decision-making powers. The bad blood between Mr Starmer’s top team and the wider party flows both ways.

America is a major market for Lotus but tariffs threaten its business, with US sellers required to pay taxes of 25% on imports of cars and car parts. Figures released on Friday for the UK's car industry revealed exports to the US had halved as President Donald Trump's tariffs caused some car makers to halt shipments. Lotus was founded in the early 1950s by engineer Colin Chapman, moving to Norfolk in the 1960s. In April, the carmaker announced 270 jobs would be cut "amid volatile and evolving market conditions including the US tariffs". However, if a deal with the US had not been reached, UK exports would have been taxed at 27.5%, as opposed to 10%.

Plans have been unveiled to transform a former steelworks into one of the UK’s largest sustainable AI data centres, with the developer saying it will create thousands of jobs and billions of pounds of inward investment. The proposals would see a data centre and battery energy storage centre built on the site of the former Ravenscraig steelworks in Motherwell, which closed in 1992. Once it is up and running, Apatura said the £3.9 billion centre will support 2,399 long-term jobs and contribute an additional 0.4 per cent to Scotland’s annual GDP. The former British Steel works at Ravenscraig in Motherwell being demolished by a controlled explosion in 1992. Apature said constrained energy payments cost £1 billion last year and are forecast to rise to £3 billion by 2030.
