Look out for humanitarian crisis Yemen, say eye specialists
THE humanitarian crisis in Yemen is often forgotten as other global crises arise, say ophthalmologists from the Anglican diocese of Cyprus & the Gulf, who have been working at a specialist eye clinic at Christ Church, Aden, since 2002. Paul Feheley, Middle East partnership officer for the US Episcopal Church, told the Episcopal News Service (ENS). The Ras Morbat Eye Clinic is described as seeing a steady stream of patients, despite running on two hours of electricity a day and having intermittent phone and internet service. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees brings Somalians from the Kharaz refugee camp to Ras Morbat every Tuesday for ophthalmology services. A resolution passed by the Episcopal Church’s 2022 General Convention launched the campaign “Fund an Ophthalmologist at the Ras Morbat Clinic”.

100 years ago: Bolshevists and the Church
THE visit of the Orthodox Patriarchs to England has naturally increased interest in the troubles of the Church in Russia. The Russian correspondent of the Times reports that the so-called Holy Synod has summoned an all-Russian Convocation to meet on October 18. This Synod consists almost entirely of nominees of the atheist Bolshevists, and two years ago it recommended the unfrocking of the sainted Patriarch Tikhon. The business of the Convocation is to create a governing body of the Church in Russia. The Church Times digital archive is available free to subscribers.

The NHS has outlined plans to become the world’s first net zero health service by 2040 (NHS England, 2022). Over the years, the NHS has become less green and more wasteful – usually in the guise of saving time. Then trollies with coffee and tea loaded into plastic cups were introduced; the plastic cups were thrown away after each use. In 2018, the NHS bought at least 163 million plastic cups, 16 million pieces of plastic cutlery, 15 million straws and 2 million plastic stirrers (OHID, 2022). Such practices can lead to infection risks, cause discomfort and are wasteful (NHS England, no date).

3 Teenagers Arrested Over Cyberattacks That Cost U.K. Retailers Millions
The British police arrested four people, including three teenagers, on Thursday in connection with an April cyberattack that cost the retail giant Marks & Spencer millions of pounds and disrupted operations at Harrods and Co-op. All four people remain in custody, arrested on suspicion of Computer Misuse Act offenses, blackmail, money laundering and participating in an organized crime group, according to a statement by Britain’s National Crime Agency. Among the three retailers, Marks & Spencer, one of Britain’s largest, was hit hardest. The attack caused months of damage. The company said in May that the “highly sophisticated” attack cost it about 300 million pounds ($407 million) in lost profits this year.

U.K. and France Sign First Nuclear Pact to Fend Off Threat to Europe
Britain and France announced a pair of landmark agreements Thursday on nuclear security and immigration, uniting two allies — if occasionally squabbling neighbors — to confront a world of proliferating threats. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Emmanuel Macron said that for the first time, their countries would work together to deploy nuclear weapons if allies in Europe came under extreme threat. While each will retain control over its arsenal, both will coordinate on policy and more closely align their nuclear doctrines. “Our adversaries will know that any extreme threat to this continent would prompt a response from our two nations,” Mr. Starmer said, standing next to Mr. Macron at Northwood, a military headquarters northwest of London. “There is no greater demonstration of the importance of this relationship.”Mr. Macron, who was wrapping up a three-day state visit to Britain, said that no two other countries had “this closeness on nuclear doctrine,” and that it was a “message our partners must hear, as well as our adversaries.”
