Players and officials pose with the Thai League 1 trophy ahead of the 2020 season in February. The 2020 domestic league season is hanging in the balance as the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) has asked clubs whether they want to play the remainder of the campaign. Somyot said playing the remaining games of the season could mean teams receive less subsidy from the FAT. "Due to the Covid-19 pandemic ... Thai football and involved parties have been affected," Pol Gen Somyot said in the letter. "This has affected the income of the Football Association of Thailand and clubs to the extent that some clubs face difficulties to continue their teams."

Fisherman alarm just 'fake news'Phuket officials yesterday insisted that a fisherman who suddenly turned up at a local hospital was a Thai man, not Indonesian, as widely reported. Dr Thanit Sermkaew, director of the Phuket Provincial Health Office, said the story that had gone viral online about an Indonesian fisherman who sneaked into Phuket was "fake news". I questioned if these images ought to be stored as archives of Thai politics," Miti said. Children are like a blank canvas and their future is the outcome of the past and present.

At least one type of local election is expected some time before the end of this year, according to Deputy Interior Minister Niphon Bunyamanee. "There must be at least one type of local election this year," he said, when asked before he attended yesterday's cabinet meeting. The ministry will have to first discuss with the Election Commission (EC) about the organisation of new local elections and then the EC will decide again when local elections will actually be held, he said. He said all sides concerned may now begin preparing for new local elections. There are four types of local election -- provincial administration organisations (PAOs); tambon administration organisations (TAOs); municipalities of three levels; and special administrative areas -- the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Pattaya City.

Plan in motion to rescue SMEs from ruinSome small and medium enterprises (SMEs) affected by Covid-19's economic impact could soon qualify for government assistance after the Legal Execution Department began adjusting its criteria to allow businesses to enter rehabilitation. Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin said yesterday many SMEs are suffering from a liquidity crunch from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, prompting foreclosures. He said the cabinet was asked to allow the department to adjust the criteria SMEs must meet to seek government assistance to cushion the impact. However, Mr Somsak said SMEs at least two million baht in debt would qualify for rehabilitation. In practice, the SMEs would come up with a rehabilitation plan to be approved by creditors.

Sub-Saharan Africa, meanwhile, will triple in size to some3 billion people, with Nigeria alone expanding to almost 800 million in 2100, second only to India's 1.1 billion. At the other end of the spectrum, 2.37 billion people -- more than a quarter of the global population -- will be over 65 years old by then. In Nigeria, by contrast, the active labour force will expand from 86 million today to more than 450 million in 2100. Until now, the United Nations -- which forecasts 8.5, 9.7 and 10.9 billion people in 2030, 2050 and 2100, respectively -- has virtually had a monopoly in projecting global population. "Continued global population growth through the century is no longer the most likely trajectory for the world's population."
