Organisers of the peace summit played down China’s decision not to attend, a move that prompted Zelenskiy to accuse Beijing of helping Moscow undermine the meeting, which China’s foreign ministry denied. Kyiv had been pushing hard for a Chinese delegation to attend the summit to give the conference further legitimacy and drive a wedge between Moscow and Beijing. “It’s rather remarkable that there’s 100 countries showing up to a peace summit at which the main instigator of that conflict is not participating,” said Max Bergmann, a former US state department official. The summit follows several previous gatherings, including one in Saudi Arabia attended by 40 countries including China, which has been trying to enlist support for its own six-point peace plan. But sources said organisers were not concerned, as there had been “no concretisation” of any Chinese diplomatic manoeuvres, with many global south countries, including Colombia, Chile, Argentina and Ecuador, attending on Saturday.

Vladimir Putin has demanded that Kyiv cede more land, withdraw troops deeper inside its own country and drop its Nato bid in order for him to end his war in Ukraine. Putin’s fresh ceasefire demands were issued as envoys from more than 90 countries, including Ukraine, convene in Switzerland this weekend to discuss a western-led peace plan. The US defence secretary, Lloyd Austin, said Putin was in no position to make demands on Ukraine and could end the war he had started “today if he chose to do that”. “And it will not go unpunished.”Ukraine and western countries are highly unlikely to agree to Putin’s terms. Putin on Friday dismissed the forthcoming peace summit in Switzerland, saying it was “just another trick to distract everyone’s attention”.

Vladimir Putin says Russia will order a ceasefire and enter peace talks if Ukraine drops its Nato ambitions and withdraws its forces from four Ukrainian regions claimed by Moscow. On the eve of a peace conference in Switzerland, to which Russia has not been invited, Putin set out a series of conditions at odds with the terms demanded by Ukraine. Russia controls nearly a fifth of Ukrainian territory in the third year of the war. Ukraine says peace can only be based on a full withdrawal of Russian forces and the restoration of its territorial integrity

The UK has announced dozens of new sanctions aimed at constraining Russia’s war in Ukraine, including targeting Moscow’s main stock exchange, a day after Washington announced similar measures. Among the new UK sanctions are its first on vessels in Putin’s so-called shadow fleet, used by the Kremlin to circumvent western curbs on its oil exports. The Financial Times reports that the UK “shadow fleet” sanctions cover the large Russian insurer Ingosstrakh as well as individual tankers including one called the Canis Power. Leaders of the G7 western economies have meanwhile outlined an agreement handing $50bn (£39bn) of aid to Ukraine backed by frozen Russian state assets. A 40-year-old man was killed by Russian fire in the Kherson region, Ukrainian officials said, while Russian-installed authorities in the region meanwhile said one civilian was killed by Ukrainian forces.

Vladimir Putin said plans by western countries to provide Ukraine with loans using interest from Russian assets frozen abroad was theft and would not go unpunished. The Russian president, speaking at a meeting with foreign ministry officials, said the way the west had treated Moscow showed that any country could fall victim to a similar asset freeze. He said: 'It is becoming obvious to all countries ... that their assets and reserves are far from safe in both the legal and economic sense of the word. Anyone could be next in line for expropriation by the US and the west'

To me it is obvious that no other problems (especially the issue of climate change) can really be solved until the wars stop. The most any of my friends do is to organise a culture event to celebrate Republic Day, once a year. People who care about Europe’s drift to the right need to take the conversation to the streets and engage beyond their immediate cosy circle. Gillian HomeriWallasey, MerseysideThe success of the National Rally party in France and the Tories’ flirtation with Reform UK hold similar warnings of the danger of the drift to the far right. What Starmer is saying will be enough to win the election, but is it enough to move the momentum away from the far right following it?

Pope Francis met comedians from around the world at the Vatican, telling them it was not heresy to joke about God. During the meeting with comedians, who included American artistes such as Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Fallon, and Chris Rock, the pontiff even made a clownish gesture, joking it would be more comical than his speech. After the audience, the pope will travel to the southern region of Puglia in a historic appearance to discuss artificial intelligence at the G7
