Vince, a white rhinoceros, was discovered with three bullets in his head and his biggest horn missing ALAMYPoachers shot dead a rare white rhinoceros at a French zoo and sawed off its horn in the first such attack in a western facility. The crime was seen as a warning to zoos across Europe that they are a target for gangs trading in rhino horn. The attackers could earn up to £35,000 on the black market for the horn. Last night the Zoological Society of London, which has a herd of rhinoceroses at its Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, said that it was stepping up security. Vince, a four-year-old southern white rhinoceros, was found dead in his cage in Thoiry Zoo outside Paris after being shot three times in the head.
