ISLAMABAD: Commenting on overthrowing of the government of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto that took place on July 5 in 1977, Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari termed the day as when “bloodshed of democracy” took place. On July 5, a military coup was imposed by then Chief of Army Staff at the time General Zia-ul-Haq. The coup witnessed ousting of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto from his office. Describing the event as “horrendous for the democratic process”, Asif Zardari said that the day promoted the culture of Kalashnikov (AK-47) and heroine in the country. Elements that oppose democracy only resort to imposition of allegations to suppress democratic ideologies”, he asserted.
