India's Modi govt releas­es budget to get growth back up, plans struct­ural reform­sNEW DELHI: India will be open-defecation free by October 2, 2019, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the Lokh Sabha in her budget speech on Friday. Giving details on India’s ‘Clean India mission’ the finance minister said 9.6 crore toilets have been constructed since October 2, 2014. India Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government unveiled the budget for 2019-20, seeking to reverse weakening growth and investment that threaten to take the shine off a recent landslide election victory. “We need to invest heavily in infrastructure, digital economy, job creation,” Sitharaman said, adding India is set to become a $3 trillion economy in the current fiscal year. Over 96 million toilets have been constructed since Oct 2, 2016 in India.
