SIBU: The government will not compromise on the safety of students at religious schools, which are now not registered with the Education Ministry. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the safety of the 50,000-odd students nationwide was of utmost importance and "there is a need to ensure that these schools are registered with the ministry." "We want these schools to be registered and have fire safety features such a voluntary fire fighting squad," he said when commenting on the fire at a religious school in Jalan Datuk Keramat in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday that killed at least 24 people. "This is not the first incident as every two to three years a similar incident is bound to occur," he said. He said the Federal government through Jakim had done their best in ensuring that the schools were properly runned since religious schools come under the respective states' administration.
