A Tauranga man has told of being forced to abandon a stricken yacht at sea after plucking its sailor to safety in a dramatic night-time rescue from dangerous seas. Mr Phillips said the boat was expected to remain at sea until Mr Christenson's insurance company arranged to retrieve it. Mr Phillips said Mr Christenson was ''completely exhausted''. Mr Phillips said Mr Christenson sought safety in the shelter of Tauranga Harbour as conditions began to worsen.
