Civil Defence warning over north Auckland flooding

Civil Defence warning over north Auckland floodingFairfax NZPeople in north Auckland are being warned to avoid driving and to watch out for rising rivers and streams and heavy rain lashes the district. Auckland Civil Defence and Emergency Management said on Wednesday significant rainfall overnight had led to surface flooding in areas of north Auckland, including Wellsford, Warkworth, and west Rodney. Earlier on Wednesday State Highway 16, between Kaukapakapa and Wellsford, in north Auckland, had been closed due to heavy flooding. MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said the flooding was due to a belt of heavy rain associated with a slow moving low that was sitting over the north Auckland region. The agency said people should stay away from areas vulnerable to flooding and slips, with heavy rain expected to continue from Warkworth to Whangaparaoa until later on Wednesday evening.
