X-Men: Dark Phoenix (M, 114mins) Directed by Simon Kinberg ★★"You're always sorry and there's always a speech – nobody cares anymore." This 12th instalment of Fox's long-running X-Men saga really feels like a series now bereft of new ideas or real purpose. In the wake of Captain Marvel, X-Men: Dark Phoenix feels like an awkward aping afterthought. Following the time-altering events of Days of Future Past and the less-than-memorable farrago that was Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix opens in 1992 with the X-Men transformed from much-maligned mutants into something akin to Thunderbirds' International Rescue. Even a game performance by Sophie Turner can't save X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
