Scientists at SeaWorld San Diego captured the incredible footage, which shows the animal’s dramatic moulting process. Mike Price, Curator at the aquarium, said: “It’s a perfectly natural occurrence for a spider crab. Instead, crabs must shed their shells, in a process called moulting. The frequency of moult is determined by their growth rate, which depends on how much they eat. When the crab outgrows its shell, it will begin moulting - a process that can take anywhere from two to 12 hours.
