A woman has become the first person in Spain to face a prison sentence in connection with a long-running scandal over the theft of thousands of babies. Rather than being accused of stealing any children, Ascensión López, 53, was sentenced to five months jail by a court in Almeria, southern Spain, for “making accusations without proof” against a nun, Sister Dolores Baena. Ms López, a disabled mother of two, cannot pay the fine of €43,000. A campaign has begun to raise the money to save her from jail.
