Stored somewhere among my old papers is a postcard dating back to the early-1980s showing President Ronald Reagan furiously picking his nose. I remember purchasing this postcard from a shop on Charing Cross Road in London that specialized in left-wing publications. That Trump's victory went against all the prophecies of pollsters, pundits and politicians in the US was obvious. Yet, none of these unexpected turns can justify the fierce hostility that has greeted Trump's victory and consequent assumption of office by those who felt short-changed by democracy. We need to assess his administration in terms of national self-interest, rather than how it impacts America's liberal values.
