The routes of State Highways 8 and 80 covering Burkes Pass to Twizel and Lake Pukaki to Aoraki/Mt Cook that are being affected by strong winds in the Mackenzie Country area of South Canterbury. Strong winds are causing issues for motorists in South Canterbury. The area is one of several across New Zealand currently under a strong wind watch issued by the MetService. “Northwesterly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places at times,” the MetService said on Tuesday morning in relation to most of Canterbury. The north-westerly air flow is expected to change on Tuesday afternoon as a series of cold fronts is forecast across the country through to early Wednesday.
