Wild Nights With Emily gives us a lighter, lustier Emily Dickinson

Dickinson’s lover, Susan (played by Susan Ziegler) marries Dickinson’s brother Austin and moves into a house next door. In Wild Nights, even Dickinson’s writing room puts paid to the idea of darkness and gloom. Those were among the 1,775 or so poems Dickinson wrote in her lifetime — poems not published until after her death, not that she didn’t try. Part of the plot is driven by the appearance every so often of a pompous male editor, willing to tell Dickinson why her poems are unpublishable. Higginson, the esteemed editor of The Atlantic (played by Brett Gelman), notes that Dickinson “exhausted him more than the horrors of war.” Yikes.
