Empathy, compassion, and respect for societal rules would seem prerequisites. The common claim is that they feel the rules don’t apply to them and that they lack empathy and compassion. The irrelevance of poor people will only be exacerbated if they never meet any, and the families and social groups of wealthy politicians appear to be significantly demographically biased. Accusations concerning rule-breaking and a lack of empathy and compassion in privileged political leaders are nothing new to the UK. It is a wonderful example of how psychologists help us to understand human behaviour and why the rule makers are too often the rule-breakers.
