Why Take Uber or Lyft to Work When You Can Hitchhike for $1?

Thousands of San Francisco commuters use a grassroots hitchhiking system called Casual Carpool to get to work each morning. Drivers for Uber and Lyft, both based in San Francisco, sometimes pick up carpoolers just so they can use the fast lanes to the bridge. When things go wrong, Casual Carpool riders spend at least some of their time venting on social media. Casual Carpool riders aren’t supposed to talk on their phones but can send email and text messages. Uber says its UberPool service offers a similar experience to Casual Carpool and gets more people into fewer cars, which is more environmentally friendly.
