Why NFL Teams Need To Proceed With Caution Regarding Blockbuster Deals

Given the new way of life brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, contracts could become even more difficult because it could affect the 2021 NFL salary cap. According to Over the Cap, the 2021 cap is projected to be around $215 million. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (h/t Reuters), the COVID-19 virus could reduce the league’s 2021 salary cap by as much as 50 percent if the games are played without fans in the stadiums. The Cowboys, who as of May 25, 2020, are projected to have $31.858 million of cap space in 2021. If the estimated $215 million cap is cut in half, which is the worst-case scenario, that will put the 2021 NFL salary cap at $107.5 million.
