Premier Jason Kenney warned official Ottawa Thursday that the Trudeau government's overhaul of environmental assessments threatens national unity. Had Kenney kept his commitment to lifting that cap, Trudeau would have had a much harder time approving the expansion this summer. Many voters outside Alberta might want Trudeau to be the prime minister who counterbalances a figure like Kenney. But for as long as there is a Prime Minister Trudeau, Kenney has someone to blame, someone to fight. If both Trudeau and Kenney play their cards right, they might have each other to tangle with for many more years to come.
