Why I can still be best friends with someone whose politics I despiseThis week, chatshow host Ellen DeGeneres received criticism for her friendship with former President George W Bush. At this point, I should confess that in 2015 one of my best friends voted for the far-right UK Independence party. He didn’t see being friends with a working-class brown person as charity, because people like me weren’t novel to him. Sometimes, living your politics means challenging those around you, even if they are your friend. Michael puts it this way: “There are facade politics and then there are real politics: with friends, you see the reality of their politics – perhaps politics they aren’t even aware of.”To illustrate his point, he tells me about a house-party he attended after Britain decided to leave the EU.
