Why Federal Taxpayers Should Not Fund Health Care For Unauthorized Immigrants

In a previous post, I showed how federal taxpayers indirectly subsidize health care for unauthorized immigrants to the tune of $11.2 billion in 2016. That figure represents 60% of the $18.5 billion in health care spending for unauthorized immigrants that is financed by American citizens. I concluded by suggesting at least four important principled arguments against federal tax financing of health care for unauthorized immigrants:Federal tax financing is unconstitutionalis unconstitutional Federal tax financing is unnecessaryFederal tax financing is immoralis immoral Federal tax financing is inefficientIn this post I will explain each of these arguments in detail. Federal Tax Financing is UnconstitutionalThe simplest argument is that federal tax financing of health care for unauthorized immigrants is unconstitutional. Federal Tax Financing is UnnecessaryThe first argument is that federal tax financing for undocumented immigrant health care is not necessary.
